View Full Version : Stevie's "H" sound...

I SO love when Stevie sings words that begin with H. Not always, but sometimes she makes that little sound right before the word...I don't even know what to call it, it's like a higher pitch, or register, or something. Does anyone else have any clue what I mean? :distress:

Some examples:

The best one, IMO - BC "...your hands held mine, so few hours..."

SB "...first he took my heart then he ran..."

LDW "...but you're too hot to touch..."

I know there's more, but this is all that's coming to me right now. Am I the only one?

Paula

PS - also love when she really pronounces (couldn't think of another word) her vibrato (like in Fall From Grace "intensified" and Nothing Ever Changes "there's just one thing I'd....")

I know EXACTLY what you're talking about! And I've tried to point it out to people, but no one else but me has seemed to notice it. Yay! I'm not crazy. :)

I love all of Stevie's quirky little vocal inflections like that. I especially love the way she always pronounces the word "man" with three or four syllables. :D

I LOVE the way she belts "Hauntingly Hauntingly familiar" on the Storytellers EO17. Her voice makes the H sound so cooolllll and intriguing IMO

Hee!

My friend, Bob, says that she says her H-es as K-s. I all denied it at first, then he told me to listen to SYW (the song) and everything else on the album, and I have to say - she does. I think I notice it most in song-SYW and DR.

Somethin' in yoooou put a kooold on my keaaaaart it's kaaard to believe noooooow. Keeeere in this plaaace that will nevah beee daaaahk I remembah thaaaat plaaaace.

LOL...I. Love. It. She totally does it and it's really something I think has to do with the way she shapes her mouth as she's singing AND how she breathes. Something else that makes Stevie, well....Stevie :D

I know "the 'H' thing"!

It's almost a very slight yodel-esque sound...stemming, we can assume, from her country roots.

I also love the little squeaky noise that comes at the end of ' follow those who pale in your shadoooow-uh'

I think she tries to do this in concert but it doesnt quite have the same effect IMO.

I also love it when she pronounces one syllable words as several syllables. For example:

"Packin' up, Shackin' up's all you wanna doooowhoooo. If I could, baby I'd give you my world, open up everything's waiting for youwhoooo."

Didn't Sheryl Crow say it drives her crazy that Stevie pretty much never drinks water? That cracked me up.

There was a huge, cute example of this when i saw the show -
"ohne uh lee you remain, you close your eyes, travel back" seriously, every one of those was enunciated perfectly and separately. so cute!!

Leno had them both on & was asking them things to compare their answers. Backstreet Boys or NSYNC? Credit or cash? Then he said "Paper or plasic?" and Stevie thought he meant credit or cash again. Guess she doesn't go to the supermarket. (Shawl clean-up on Aisle 6!)

H~~~MMMM, I can hear whau u speak of.
In a pipe organ, the pink noise of the initial puff of air as sufficiant air pressure allows the note to burst through is sometimes called "chaff". I have heard other tearms for this, but "chaff" is the one i have heard most often. Perhaps there may be a link to this phenomenon.
Anyways, just thinking about it gives me shivers.

Sheryl did indeed say that Stevie never drinks water, she drinks way too much coffee. She was talking about the TISL tour and how she wanted Stevie to stay healthy and it frustrated her that Stevie never drank any water but drank gallons of coffee.

That Leno interview was PRICELESS. My favorite part was when Stevie was asked by Leno how she gets her groceries and she replies "I send somebody". Such a cool chick. She obviously hasn't spent alot of time bagging groceries and had no clue what Leno meant with the "paper or plastic" line...bwah.

OT..Sheryl has been on tv quite a bit lately watching her man Lance win several stages of the Tour. She looks tan and extrememly happy. She was crying and kissing him after he won Stage 14. I am thrilled for her~~

I'm late to the party, but I just saw this thread. THIS is my absolute favorite Stevie moment EVER. I remember watching this live and I about fell off the bed when she said "cash". I laughed and laughed and laughed. Then I laughed some more. :)

I heard another H sound that is the perfect example:

L&L: "When you walked into my house..."

It's like when Bush Sr. thought the check-out scanners were brand new. He hadn't been shopping in some time either, one imagines.

I was just listening to the acapella version that was just on The Gypsy Dreamer Graphics site (Great site and thank you!)
