I agree with all of your saddest, especially POTU. Let's throw in Mistaken Love as well.
None of your happy choices seem happy to me. They're all about reflecting on break-ups in a bittersweet way, IMO.

Again, I can see Juliet as happy, but none of the others seem very happy to me.
And IMO Nightbird doesn't strike me as very sad in relation to the tragedy of some of Stevie's songs. Can you explain your picks?

This is hard because a lot of times Stevies lyrics don't match the mood of her songs or vice versa. So with that in mind...
Happiest:
Think About It
Angel
I Don't Wanna Know (it's upbeat, as for the lyrics, they're not too serious either)
Seven Wonders
SYW
Enchanted
Saddest:
Storms
Beauty and The Beast
Goodbye Baby
Belladonna

Destiny Rules does not sound happy to me. Can you explain the pick?
She's singing about being with her love for eternity in another life, because her destiny right now doesn't have it in the cards. When they were together in a beautiful setting, however, it was bliss and nothing else mattered. Even though they're no longer on the same path as each other, neither regrets what they had because it was beautiful while it lasted; even though it's over, they still have the memories. Sounds happy to moi.
Just look at the lyrics:
Maybe we were together in another life
Maybe we are together in a parallel universe
Maybe our paths are not supposed to cross twice
Maybe your arms are not supposed to go around me
When I see you again,
As I always do
It appears to me that
Destiny rules
And the spirits are ruthless with the paths they choose
It's not being together,
It's just following the rules
No one's a fool...
Just following the rules... no one's a fool
Just following the rules... no one's a fool
Just following the rules... no one's a fool
No one's a fool...

Goodbye Baby
I never considred this a sad song. If anything, it's a very hopeful song. She's saying that she wishes someone's (let's not get into who that someone is  ) heart isn't broken because she'll be in their company again and forever eventually.

Screw you, Jake.
Just kidding. I guess it's the music & delivery more than the actual lyrics that make me feel happy:
IDWK: her vocal sounds really happy to me, like she's smiling while she's singing them. Plus, there's CLAPPING, for God's sake, CLAPPING! (sorry, I'm a sucker for clapping. I also clap along to Jack & Diane and Take the Money & Run.)
SW: It sounds like she's remembering a great time in her life - like when you first meet someone & you get those butterflies, it's so exciting. And the video is great, love LB's antics & expressions.
That's Alright: Sounds pretty hopeful to me - "I hope you find a love, your own designs of love" Also empowering "I'm through waiting for you" and "I decided yesterday that I would leave you, I'm alright"

Yeah, but "Don't take me to the tower/and take my child away" just gets me every time. I guess it's hopeful by the end, but the first part of that song is a real tear-jerker.

I would have added Outside the Rain to the sad list but "Love is a word some entertain, If you find it, You have won the game" seems too happy/hopeful to make OTR one of the saddest.

Yeah, but the thing that gets me is that she doesn't regret anything, because she has faith that they'll be together eventually. And she doesn't just hammer it home at the end, she pushes it throughout the whole song. I think that's what it's all about; not grief, hope.

Again, in a lot of instances, there tends to be a disconnect between the mood/tone/emotion of Stevie's lyrics and the music that accompanies those lyrics. For instance, Enchanted is one of the bounciest seemingly happiest tunes I've ever heard, yet the lyrics are a total 180 of the music. Same with Gypsy, and The Wild Heart etc...
So maybe the question should be: What are the happiest and saddest songs in terms of music and/or lyrics? Stevie doesn't make it easy for us to lump the two together.

It's just a bad song, IMO, and they can't improve it by simply editing out the "Whassamattababay's" or singing it together onstage. The lyrics stink and Stevie would probably use it as an excuse to sing in a monotone voice. It would be a bore.

Saddest #1 for me would be "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You." I remember where I was the first time I heard this song. It was June of 1999 and I was moving from Chattanooga, TN to Little Rock, AR. I was so upset leaving my home I popped in TimeSpace. For some reason I had never listened to that song. I cried for about 15 minutes.
#2 "Silver Springs" The lyrics to this one alone tell the story. Its the perfect "break up" or "could have been" song.
#3 "Talk to Me" This somewhat upbeat sounding tune hides the sadness of it. The feel of it reminds me of "Missing You" by John Waite.
#4 "Reconsider Me" This song upsets me everytime I hear it. Stevie is practically begging at the end of it. It's pitiful...
Happiest?
#1 Say You Will, #2 Stand Back, #3 Blue Denim (its not a "great" tune, but she's in love and its happy)

I think of Talk To Me as a somewhat happy song. The lyrics express frustration, but the sound is pretty upbeat, just like almost everything on RAL.

I get the feeling you didn't know this, so you were really perceptive with the "Missing You" connection... "Talk To Me" was written by Chas Sandford, who co-wrote "Missing You" with John Waite. :)

I assumed Mylittledemon knew this, or else the connection between the two songs was quite an amazing observation.

But my favorite is still the angry Petty version. I think the piano demo is sad. I think the album version is her sitting back reflecting.

Ooh. I need to hear this. I read somewhere that it had a slight Blondie sound to it, and that really piqued my interest. Plus, if its Stevie collaborating with TP&THB, then it mhas to be great. I'll have to request this on one of the FM download sites soon .

HAPPIEST:
1. Say You Will
2. Without You
3. Angel
4. Think About It
5. Paper Doll
SADDEST:
1. Blue Denim~~ IMHO, one of her saddest songs EVER
2. Bombay Sapphires (I know Stevie says the "I can see past you" line is supposed to be hopeful, but I hear an incredible sadness in these lyrics, as if she is trying very hard to convince herself that she can indeed, move on)
3. Silver Springs~ no explanation necessary
4. Goodbye Baby--- it would be hopeful, if I did not always think of the backstory when listening to it.
5. Storms--- gut wrenchingly so.
6. Stand Back (yes, musically it kicks ass but my interpretation of her lyrics makes me feel it is really a very sad song, very troubled, with alot of fear, confusion, anger and a sense of being abandoned emotionally running through it. To me, that is all very sad.

To me the sadness of Blue Denim is in her voice. She sounds klike she's about to crack from misery.

I am surprised no one has said alic eyet for one of the saddest.
"Like alice through the Looking Glass. She used to know who she was"
Stevie looking through a mirror saying how she used to know who she was obsviously. Very sad to me.

Chas Sandford (sometimes credited as Chas Sanford) isn't too famous, so it's unlikely you would have heard of him... he's a songwriter/musician/producer out of Nashville, and other than Stevie & John Waite, he's worked with Chicago, Bette Midler, Roger Daltry, Berlin, and others. :)

I don't feel it, I guess. For a long time Alice was my least favorite Stevie song. Oh well.
I guess you could make a similar case for Real Tears.

That song never did anything for me. It's probably due to it sounding like a demo more than a studio track. I remember a few radio interviews back from when it was released where people said they loved it, though. I never got it, I guess.

I think I've mentioned that my mother tends to prefer Lindsey's music (her other faves: The Beatles, Paul McCartney solo, Tears For Fears, Simply Red & Seal)... but her two favorite Stevie songs are Illume and Real Tears.

I did say in my previous post that it was going to be difficult to find a totally happy, Stevie song.
Anyway, here was my take on Candlebright, and why I thought it was overall a happy song. The person she is writing this about understands her, and they except her for who she is----a woman who spends most of her life traveling. But regardless, they make things right for her whether this person is with her or only with her in her mind.-----For no special reason I am leaving you for awhile tonight I'm flying far above you Still I love you You make things right
Also, this person always has a way of leading her back home, and keeping her grounded----You're my candlebright in the window You guide me back again She write that I can't feel bad about them not having the relationship that she would like, because she is gone a lot. She know is doing all she can, and she seems to be at peace with that. I know in the lyrics that it says you are not my friend, but she could mean that this person is more than a friend to her.
But I also see a different take on this song, as well. This song could be about someone that she really cares about, but they don't quite feel the same way she does. She knows this, but they keep pulling her back in. She loves them in spite of herself. But if that is the interpretation, she seems to understand it and be at peace with it. It is like she is taking the relationship as it is, and believing in the good parts which help her through life on the road. She seems to have a positive outlook on the situation regardless. Therefore, if this is the true interpretation, it is still has a somewhat positive message.
Also, Candlebright has a pleasant, upbeat, musical backing, which helps with the pleasantness (Pleasantness---is that a word?!) of the song.
This is why music is left up to interpretation, huh?!
Here are the lyrics for reread, if you would like:
For no special reason
I am leaving you for awhile tonight
I'm flying far above you
Still I love you
You make things right
Chorus:
I've been with you before
I'll be with you again
I'll come back for more, yea
The story has a strange ending
Well, you know me I'm a nomad
I can't feel bad
About the way I am
I've been rolling around
My whole life
You're my candlebright in the window
Chorus:
You guide me back again
And I come when you shine
You are not my friend, no
But I am something of a dreamer
I am something of a dreamer
I am something of a dreamer
(Repeat verse and Chorus)
Still I love you
My candlebright
You are not my friend
But still I love you
You're my candlebright
Still I love you
But you are not my friend
But still I love you
I can't feel bad
