Hey, I don't think she's washed up in the least. As I've said many times, I thought she was in '94, but that's all over and she's back and better than ever.
Reading you and Gaius go back and forth, I simply pointed out where I thought the two of you were hitting a snag. I don't mean to speak for him becaus ehe's more than capable of speaking for himself ( ), but I think his argument was that, in his opinion, she was washed-up to the general record-buying public.
I know, you're right. I guess sometimes I miss Gaius's point because well, (sorry Gaius) his posts can be quite long y'know...

. . . And to say that Stevie herself got the biggest ovation at Divas Live is just ridiculous.
I do not know what you watched  , but when Stevie hauled out on stage with the Dixie Chicks they got huge applause - people stood and were singing along with them. To me, that can be called on of the largest ovations at the Divas. So, while certainly the DC received some of that applause because at that time they were VERY popular and would have goten it without Stevie, Stevie's presence certainly added to the excitement of seeing that live performace because although the DC received a large response when they were onstage by themselves, the DC got a larger response when Stevie was there with them  Of course the beauty of the song on its own coupled with peoples' familiarity with it and the IMO glowing version of it added to that response, but Stevie was part of all of that. So, I conclude Stevie got one of the largest ovations at The Diva's, which is saying alot because Cher also got one - I mean when you haul out dressed as Elvis . . .
In any event, that is my take of it. I do not expect anyone to agree with me because it is all subject to personal interpretation and that is mine

but there are songs off Rock A Little and TOSOTM that are still played on the radio now. Pretty good going by my standards, why isn't that good enough for you?
Not in the States, darling. Although I think Rooms On Fire, No Spoken Word, I Can't Wait, Long Way To Go, Ooh My Love, and most of the other songs should be radio staples.

Yeah, she got one of the biggest, but to say she alone got the BIGGEST is absurd. If I recall correctly, Cher got the biggest ovation when she came out dolled-up like Elvis. :xoxo: They went apeshit.

Exactly. But that's a blasphemous statement around these parts, Gaius.
True, but I do not think the track would have been remixed by two of the hottest out there then if it had been by an unknown and if they did not like the track. Tracy Yound speciically said it was an honor equal to remixing Madonna's Ray of Light (I think that is one she remixed). Tracy Young also told me personally that she loved the song and it was a thrill to remix it. I think somewhere in those sales is Stevie's popularity. I can remember when it first came out people were excited and saying while dancing things like I love Stevie, this is a cool song, those lyrics are so cool, chanting "You won't forget you won't forget you won't foget" while dancing. So, yes there is no question having Tracy Young and VC do the remixes was a huge thing, the song was still Stevie's and that fact certainly added to the sales of that. How could it not. So, I think when people say the dance remixes of POTU were popular, it is a bit unfair to attribute all of the success to TY and VC. Some of the success must go to Steive herself because she wrote it and sang it

Not even Talk To Me and Rooms On Fire? Weird. They often play those here in England and Stevie wasn't even that big here as a solo artist.
Hmmm, I shalln't take your word for it until someone else confirms it! :)

You use biggest twice in the same sentence  It was one of the biggest. No question in my mind. But, it was not as big as Cher as Elvis. That probably was the biggest of the evening 's ovations.
LOL - I often wonder who the hell would want to follow Cher as Elvis  Talk about a hard act to follow

A very hard act to follow. Stevie would have to come dressed as Ole Blue Eyes with Nancy's famous boots for added effect.
And I used it thrice. ;)

And wasn't OSOTM a big hit in the UK?

There's no queston that it being Stevie added to the sales. However, the song would not have been serviced to clubs if Tracy Young or VC had not remixed it. It was a hit because of the mixers, it just happened to be a good song that they were remixing. People heard a good mix and went to buy it. But without the mixers, the song would've been dead int he water. Call it speculation, but I know how clubs operate when it comes to their playlists and they calculate them based on the remixers, not the artists.

he's more than capable of speaking for himself ( )
And I'm also equally capable of embarrassing myself around here :o, being the obsessive nitpicker that I am.
Isn't that kinda unfair though? TISL is only a few years old, hardly enough time for it to reach classic status.
I agree in that you can't call a relatively recent song a classic; you have to wait for some time for that. I usually wait for two decades or something like that but it's different for other people, I know.
...there are songs off Rock A Little and TOSOTM that are still played on the radio now. Pretty good going by my standards, why isn't that good enough for you?
I don't know if you're speaking of the British radio here, or even the radio station that you like to listen to (you know, the one that supposedly plays even album tracks from SYW). What songs have you heard in addition to "Talk To Me" (everyone knows that was her biggest solo hit in USA) and "Rooms On Fire" (her biggest solo hit in the UK) and "HAEWAFY" (which was never that successful on the charts but obviously has earned its place as the traditional Stevie set closer)?
I don't think you measure this through mere radioplay. You also measure this through the crowd response in concerts and I think that's a huge factor for Stevie as well. She hasn't felt the need to play "Talk To Me" or "Rooms On Fire" on stage lately, btw.
Why isn't it good enough for me? What does my opinion matter here anyway? I'm just a drop in the ocean. I don't think Stevie's ever been washed-up, not even on Street Angel. But maybe I just identify with her personality too much.
Any older act owes a huge part of its following to the nostalgia factor.
Of course, but when I saw Snwriter saying that Stevie is still a superstar, I had to roll my eyes. Ok, she is a superstar, but a superstar who relies mainly on nostalgia, not just in her audience but also in her setlist selections (who knows, maybe she is too afraid of trying a lot of new or different stuff on stage every night  ) and her appeal right now is restricted to North America only. A global superstar she isn't, probably not even when she goes on tour with Fleetwood Mac.
You have to admit though Gaius there's an abnormal amount of young people on this board for a band that have been going for so long. I realise older fans might not feel inclined to check out a messageboard, but still, it cetainly shows that Stevie and Lindsey have a fair amount of young fans out there.
Well I'm glad of this too. We see a lot of young people around here because they still have the time and the passion for Fleetwood Mac. I don't think there's that much of the huge nostalgia crowd around here; they most likely wouldn't even feel the need to discuss one mere rock and roll band to this extent. Or to even post the one obligatory "I'm new here" post. ;)
Who knows, maybe there's a nostalgia factor involved for some of us younger ones also. You know, that vibe of wanting to see the band in its glory days when they were still young and "Rhiannon" was a monster, etc. Young people who don't like SYW that much? There's some of them around here for sure (btw, did you ever read this review: http://desperado.scvnet.com/~philh/wwwboard/messages/1749.html)
I know, you're right. I guess sometimes I miss Gaius's point because well, (sorry Gaius) his posts can be quite long y'know...

I agree and think we are talking about two different things and it is a "chicken or the egg" argument. In the end, I think it is the combination of both that lead to its huge success.

Yeah, I think the vocalist has something to do in there as well, and so does John Shanks' original production. I don't think it was played in gay discos only. ;)

Where is the third in the same sentence - there are two sentences? Touche'
Also, I think Stevie in a cowgirl outfit with six shooters would have been hysterical. A little Patsy Cline to fit the country motif.

Maybe not the biggest, but I do remember how, when she sang ONE LINE of Landslide, the crowd went absolutely NUTS. "Take this love, take it down" minus Dixie harmonies made the audience go wild. It made me think they would rather hear Stevie do the whole song by herself. I know I would, lol.

OSOTM is another matter. I don't think I've heard anything from OSOTM or SA on the radio. :( However, I did hear Every Day quite a few times. Too bad I didn't actually LIKE that one. Why didn't she use the title track for a single?! It rocks!

Me, too. I despise the Dixie Chicks version.
In any event, I was responding to the remark that Stevie got the biggest ovation of the concert, which I don't believe to be true. But it's all perception, I guess.

Sorry to nitpick, but Talk To Me is on RAL.
And I was thinking yesterday that considering what a hit it was, I never hear it any longer on the radio. I'm surprised as well that Stevie hasn't put it back in her solo set. But then again she always said it's tough to sing.
I hear Stand Back, Edge, GDW, Leather and Lace, SDMHA, and Dreams on the radio down here. That's it from stevie.
