Wow! This is from November 1993. It doesn't even look to be from that era. Why wasn't this the cover of Street Angel?

It reminds me of the other one from that era, the one where she is holding a parasol and balancing on one foot. This one is more flattering. Something about the eyes here is indicative of the period, though.

I had never seen that before! It definitely ranks up there with my all-time fave photos.
At first glance, I must admit, I thought her hand across her chest was a very large and protruding something else. I was like - DAMN - those implants were big, weren't they?
But upon much CLOSER inspection...

It was in a one-page interview in a magazine, maybe Spin. I'll need to check my stacks. (Warning: She looks like a New Age plantinum Olive Oyle.)

Why does everyone think this picture is so great? I think it is rather ugly actually. The headband thing is strange, she has no color in her face... I just don't like it. :sorry:
What is so great about it, may I ask?

It's got great color, it's very unique, and it captures Stevie's image perfectly.

Yeah, it's weird, huh? In this one and the parasol photo, she looks quite skinny, unlike almost every other image from the time. Maybe she really slimmed down for this session and gained it all back? Either that, or they were heavily "retouched"... but they don't really look like they were...

Stevie is very clever at photo taking. Notice you do not see her rear end, where I submit she is heaviest, in this picture.
Note: I love Stevie at any weight and am not commenting on that. I am commenting solely on her clever ability to hide what she wants in photos.

It's true that a subject can be placed in certain positions to look thinner in a photograph... and/or the photo can be manipulated afterwards, to make the subject appear thinner than they are.
Here's what i don't get though... in some of the 'Street Angel' articles, the interviewers made a point to mention that Stevie had lost "a lot of weight."
Some of these interviews sounded as if they were conducted in person, so let's assume the interviewers were seeing a weight loss.
I think it was in the US Magazine article where they even asked her if she was going to end up being a spokesperson for Slim-Fast, given how much weight she had lost.
So, this is what I'm wondering....
'Street Angel' was supposed to be released in the fall of '93, and the first photograph in this thread was credited on the LaChapelle site as having been taken in November of '93.
Perhaps Stevie had lost weight around this time (which would have been right after the Klonopin detox), and that's why she looks thin in many of the 'SA' era publicity shots (the LaChapelle photos, the 'Street Angel' promo poster shots, etc.), and why weight loss was a point of discussion in some of the 'SA' articles.
Then by the time the album was actually released, she began touring, and the articles were published (By the way, keep in mind that it's not unusual for articles to appear months after the interviews are conducted), she had gained weight again.
Does this seem possible?
For the record, I'm not saying that these photos were definitely not manipulated to make Stevie appear thinner, or something, I'm just trying to figure out a reason for the weight loss comments made by the interviewers.

I don't doubt that some of the photos for SA were a little enhanced. But the fact is, (and I may have said this before) she was very thin at the beginning of the SA tour. I have a photo, somewhere, from the infamous Roxbury show before the tour began. She was pretty slimmed down. A few times during the show, she raised her arms and I could see that she had a white leotard on under her costume, and she was looking very trim. As is well documented, this was not the case by the end of the tour.
But I saw it folks. She was looking way tiny, and somehow or another, her body changed dramatically in a few months. Happens.

For the record, it's entirely possible that she lost the weight and gained it back. Women can do that so easily. I'm sure it was a very difficult adjustment her body had been through. It's also quite possible that she was in the early stages of menopause at this time.

Usually when the body detoxes from drugs such as Klonopin, it loses a lot of weight just because of the sheer stress the body is going through. You have no appetite whatsoever, you're in constant pain, so your body burns all of the fat that you have to keep you going. However, once you're completely clean from all of the drugs, you gain a lot of weight if you aren't careful because your metabolism has slowed down considerably and your body is still recovering from the shock.
I think these interviews were conducted right after she got out of detox. :)

Also, in the S.A. tour, she used photos that appeared to have been taken before that era. The one that comes to mind is the one on the tour poster that is in the Nicksfix. Also, Stevie is very, very small - so even a five pound loss or gain is noticeable.

That and others like it, were definitely new to the 'Street Angel' era.
(By the way, I loved the Bridget Bardot-esque hairstyle she was wearing in many of the 'SA' pics... I think it's my favorite of her various hairstyles.)

She needed something to offset the look on her face. Egads!

That's a great photo. I like the one (from the same sessions) with her still standing and her hands crossing her chest as in either a little chilly, or like she's shielding herself.

I have the seated one from this session hanging framed in my bathroom. (They sold it on the tour, if you remember.) Much better pics than the album cover or back cover.

Johnny - the reason I say these pics were older than the SA era is that at the two concerts I went to, everyone (many I did not know and just overheard) was like - she is using old pics because she sure does not look like that now. Based on her appearance at the concerts, I had to agree. I also base this on youthful almost pre-RAL look her face has, which was not apparent in the late 80's/early 90's whether it was the BTM or the SA tour. But, that look could be achieved with airbrushing and whatever limited computer stuff they had then. It is also highly possible these pics were outtakes from TOTOTM. I base this on her use of the original BD concept photo for the cover of WH.
