...What would you like to see her record? Pick an albums worth of songs (let's say 13 songs like her last album) and tell us what they are. They can be classic rock, newer songs, oldies, swing songs, jazz, anything.

My picks:

1. I Shall Be Released (Dylan)
2. Stuff Like That There (Various)- It would be so adorable! LOL
3. You Got It (Roy Orbison/Bonnie Raitt)
4. The Waiting (Tom Petty)
5. Stay With Me Baby (Various)- I can just hear her now, 'I wish someone would grab ahold of me and say 'NO! You CAN'T Go! NO, STAY!!'
6. Train In Vain (The Clash/Annie Lennox)
7. Beast Of Burden (Rolling Stones)
8. Frozen (Madonna)
9. Tombstone Blues (Dylan)
10. E Street Shuffle (Springsteen)
11. Rebel Rebel (Bowie)
12. Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (Bette Midler)
13. Boys of Summer (Don Henley)

Personally, I think that would be the worlds perfect covers album.

I know you like Bette, but let's give the Andrews Sisters their due, even if they didn't write it.:) (Sorry, I've had a thing for them since seeing them in an Abbott and Costello movie when I was little.)

Okay, my picks, off the top of my head:

Half Moon - Janis Joplin
Kozmic Blues - Janis Joplin
I Need to Know - Tom Petty (Put it on an album, already!)
Fistful of Rain - Warren Zevon
Wild World - Cat Stevens
Desperado - The Eagles
Love the One You're With - Stephen Stills
Sweet Baby James - James Taylor
St. Teresa - Joan Osbourne

I'll be back to add the rest.

I'm not a fan of the orignal Andrews Sisters version. So there!

I can't stand the Eagles, but Stevie could do wonders with Desperado. Good one!!

I think a collaboration between Stevie and Michael Stipe could produce something AMAZING.

In no particular order...

Counting Crows- Long December
Sheryl Crow- Home
Fiona Apple- Never Is A Promise
Fiona Apple- I Know
Tori Amos- Winter
Poe- Fingertips
10cc- I'm Not In Love (it's been covered LOTS but Stevie would rock it)
The Dixie Chicks- Top of the World
No Doubt- Don't Speak
Sarah McLachlan- Possession
Ella Fitzgerald- Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man
Beth Gibbons (lead singer of Portishead)- Tom The Model

Stevie has a voice that was meant to sing jazz and blues so I think she'd probably sing the hell out of ANY jazz standard you'd throw her way  I have much love for the jazz

If I get a chance later, I'll come up with enough for a full album, but the ONE song I've always thought cried out for Stevie's voice, is "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore."

Loneliness is a cloak you wear
A deep shade of blue is always there

The sun ain't gonna shine anymore
The moon ain't gonna rise in the sky
The tears are always clouding your eyes
When you're without love

Emptiness is the place you're in
With nothing to lose
But no more to win

The sun ain't gonna shine anymore
The moon ain't gonna rise in the sky
The tears are always clouding your eyes
When you're without love

Lonely... without you, baby
(Boy,) I need you
I can't go on....

The sun ain't gonna shine anymore
The moon ain't gonna rise in the sky
The tears are always clouding your eyes
When you're without love

Loneliness is the cloak you wear
A deep shade of blue is always there...

The sun ain't gonna shine anymore
The moon ain't gonna rise in the sky
The tears are always clouding your eyes
When you're without love

In My Life - The Beatles (even though so many people have covered this)

Blackbird - The Beatles

Calico Skies - Paul McCartney

Touch Your Woman - Dolly Parton

Bitch-Meredith Brooks (Just kidding ;) )

Dance Without Sleeping- Melissa Etheridge

Okay...this is as far as my brain is taking me...

Though I agree with Jake's suggestion of Wild World by Cat Stevens..:D

Half Moon & TELL MAMA! by Janis (Tell Mama originally by Etta James, then Janis). I would love to hear her tear that one up. I think it was the Rolling Stone review for the Wild Heart where they said something like "her voice is not the most technical instrument but when she cranks it up she can wail with the best of the blues mamas". She certainly does in the song The Wild Heart-parts of that song vocally seem very Janis-esque to me.

Every Day and Too Far From Texas are fine on TISL but for me, it's the tunes she has composed herself that have the most impact. Oh and I almost forgot Sometimes It's A Bitch (a bit dull) and the God awful travesty that is Love's A Hard Game To Play!

:D

Why does docklands get picked on so much? I actually love that song and I can understand if Stevie loved it also. It is one of my favorite songs that she does.

I also love Sometimes it's a Bitch and Cry Wolf, but I will say that after reapraising Loves a Hard Game to Play, now that I am a big fan!, I think it is awful. Too many cliches ruin this song, the lyrics are uninspired!

Am I the only one here who would be incredibly ammused to hear Stevie's take on Hole's Violet ? I think that she could pull it off. Seriously.

Anyways, here are some more suggestions...

Garbage- Cup of Coffee
No Doubt- Dark Blue
U2- One
4 Non-Blondes- What's Up

I'd also like to hear her take on Ozzy Osbourne's Goodbye to Romance ... again, I'm not kidding.

Smile

Smile, you’ll steal away my soul
Smile, I’ll hide away and cry
My mind’s made up
I will shudder to see your eyes
Smile no doubt I’ll keep my pride
But It may be hard to find

There’s nothing left
Handed down your legacy
But more regret
Painted on with empathy

Smile, don’t complicate my time
Smile don’t ask me if I’m fine
My world blown down
There is nothing that words can say
Smile, no doubt I’ll keep my pride
But it may be hard to find

There’s nothing left
Handed down your legacy
But more regret
Painted on with empathy

There’s nothing left, there’s nothing left

Smile, you’ll steal away my soul
Smile, I’ll hide away and cry
There’s nothing left
Handed down your legacy

Smile, you’ll steal away my soul
Smile, I’ll hide away and cry
There’s nothing left
Handed down your legacy
Smile, no doubt I’ll keep my pride
But it may be hard to find

If only you had tried
Going to leave it far behind
It may be hard to find
If only you had tried
Going to leave it far behind

Of course Tom Petty is always an exception and I like the things she has co-written with Sandy Stewart (apart from Unconditional Love - yuk!) and the Sheryl Crow songs she has done. And I admit, Talk To Me is actually one of the best songs on RAL.

I agree, though Love Changes is my least favorite on TISL.
Also, I find it disappointing that some of the songs others write have been picked as singles. Every Day is a great video but mediocre song. Maybe Love is overrated, IMO.

Just a few that I can think of:

OLDER SONGS
Sweet Caroline: Neil Diamond
Son of a Preacher Man: Dusty Springfield
Midnight Train to Georgia: Gladys Knight and the Pips
White Rabbit: Jefferson Airplane
Me and Bobby Magee: Janis Joplin
Good Enough: Cyndi Lauper (so out of place with the other five, I know)
plus, I would love to hear Stevie do Black Magic Woman

NEWER SONGS
Out of My Heart (Into Your Head): BBMak
If You're Gone: Matchbox Twenty
Broadway: Goo Goo Dolls
Beautiful Stranger: Madonna
Don't Let Me Get Me: Pink

Okay, done thinking for now. I know the newer songs may sound odd, especially Stevie singing BBMak, but that song's lyrics sound a lot like what she would write (especially currently).

I feel fine, now the rain has gone
And the sun has come to shine
Nothing can get me down today
I'm head over heels
Got my mind made up as I'm driving through the fields
Nothing can get me down again
Catch me if you can
I've gotta make a getaway

As the sun goes down, waking up my dreams
And in my heart, you're with me once again
Out of my heart, into your head
And beside my heart there's a place for you
And in my mind, I'm with you once again
Out of my heart, into your head

Chasing the sun, trying to get away
From the rain that's gonna come
Hope I make it all the way
I'm lost in a crowd
Trying to find my way
But the rain keeps falling down
Doesn't matter anyway
Catch me if you can
I've gotta make a getaway

(chorus)

Take a look at the sky, feel the sun shine
In your heart, in your head
In your own time

First off, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy was originally done by the Andrews Sisters.

Which songs would I want Stevie to do in a covers album? I don't think Stevie does covers very well (with I Need To Know being the exception), but anyway:

1. I Need To Know (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers)
2. Angel Of The Morning (Merilee Rush)
3. These Dreams (Heart)
4. The Difficult Kind (Sheryl Crow)
5. Why Can't I (Liz Phair)
6. Both Side Now (Judy Collins)
7. Everybody Knows (Leonard Cohen)
8. Volunteers (Jefferson Airplane)
9. Times Like These (Foo Fighters)
10. Emotion (Bee Gees)
11. Hearts (Marty Balin)
12. Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper)
13. Lose Yourself (Eminem) JUST KIDDING

I think Linda Ronstadt's version of Desperado is the best ever recorded but then again I am a huge fan of hers.

On to covers Stevie should do:
Definitely some Janis, I'm surprised she hasn't yet!

Maybe some Neil Young, "I Believe In You", "Birds", "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere."

Sheryl Crow: "Rescusitation" (spelling elludes me, sorry), "Run Baby Run", "Sweet Rosalyn", "Can't Cry Anymore."

Whoever said Cat Stevens is right on. "Wild World" would be awesome.

I'd also love to hear Stevie's rendition of "Mistral Wind" by Heart, she could really belt it out now with her delicious, ultra deep raspy, voice. "Alone" would be a good one for her too.

And how about "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler? It seems like so many people I know have confused these two and think it's Stevie singing it--hell, she should just go ahead and cover the damn thing!

TISL had a very country vibe to it (Cadlebright, Sorcerer, It's Only Love, Too Far From Texas, That Made Me Stronger) and Stevie has been influenced by country music so I can definately see her doing an entire country album

I'd love to hear her do "Nobody's Crying," "Top of the World" or any number of songs by Patty Griffin (the Dixie Chicks did "Top of the World" on their last album). And I, too, would love to hear her do a Dolly Parton song...maybe
"But You Know I Love You"? It's got that whole traveling woman rock star thing. Oh, and although I am partial to Rufus Wainwright's version, I think Stevie could do an amazing job of "Hallelujah." Really, she can sing anything and I will listen.
