In the liner note lyrics, the opening lin to I Can't Wait says, "Yes I Know You"

Could of sworn it was "How Could I Love You"....

To me it sounds like "How do I love you..."

And we all know that Stevie's liner notes are not always accurate, so who knows.

I have a 45 rpm from Australia that has a different mix of the song. It begins with "yes I know you". The lyrics in the liner notes for Talk to Me also seem to follow the alt. version that was on that hits of the 80's compilation. Maybe the lyrics in the liner notes were compiled from these earlier versions and printed before the final mixes were decided on?

Makes sense to me.

This bugs me too, I don't know if the notes are printed wrong, or if there are other versions with those lyrics, or if she just changed the words in the middle of recording the song.

Another one that glares at me is Angel:

Stevie sings "and we both pretend/ no great pretender" (I think)

Lyrics say "and we both pretend/ there was an end/ but there was no ending"

There were 2 versions basically released at the same time, the album version, and the "single version" which was what was on the 45 of I Cant Wait. It was called the "single version" although I don't think I ever heard that version on the radio . I like the beginning of that version a little better (Yes I know you, Yes I know you). I think both versions have the echoey "how do I love you, how can I love you" bit at the end. The part that always through me (that I don't think was accurately represented in the lyrics) was the part in the middle with the tweaked, overlapping voices saying "how will we feel 10 years from now, how will we feel twenty years from now....).
And I really love on the remix versions (and maybe the single version?) at the very end where she kind of wails "well if I'm wasting my time while you make up your mind, well I've got to know when I can see you again WOH YEAH! I cant wait I cant wait" Thiose lines belted out just seem to have more passion or soul to me than the rest of the song which I always thought she sounded a little flat or coarse on.

Oh, I ordered RAL on BMG and I thought they just messed up the liner notes since it was just a music club. Mine has songs out of order and everything! Is this the same for everyone else?

Yup. I find it quite amusing, myself.

"I Can't Wait" is one of those singles that was fun for collectors, since there were so many versions floating around.

The 7" single version (the one that starts out with the lyrics, "Yes, I know you") is also known as the "soft intro" version.

There was a promo record that featured the soft intro version on one side, and the "edit of LP rock intro" on the other side.
The latter mix is recognizable as the version they used for the video.

Then, of course, there are the extended rock and the extended dance mixes from the 12" maxi-single, and the dub versions of each.

I've also been told there's another version that was used for the UK 7" single, but I haven't heard it to compare it to the others.

Anyone wish to share? :)

The interesting thing about the lyrics in the 'Rock A Little' liner notes, is that in some cases they follow versions that aren't even included on the album.

For instance, the lyrics for "Rock A Little" follow the extended alternate version found on the UK 12" maxi of "I Can't Wait," and in the case of "Talk To Me," they follow the alternate mix only released on that various artists compilation, called 'It's Only Love.'

The lyrics to "The Nightmare" don't exactly follow the album version OR the "special remix" found on the US "I Can't Wait" 12" maxi.

Go figure!

I love the RAL version but hate the extended mix that's on Enchanted. The keyboards are quite different.
And thanks to everyone who tipped me off to the live version not too long ago, and to dissention for posting it.

"To understand the liner notes you have to let yourself go a little crazy...RAL is blind, it never works out...but you just have to have it.";) :wavey:

Is it just me or do you also hear "how would you feel ten years from now?" I'm pretty sure the liner notes say something different from that.

You're welcome. :D I don't really like it live, it's missing a certain park. Stevie used a pre-recorded track during much of the song and it was kinda funny because she was so out of it that she couldn't follow it.

My favorite version of I Can't Wait is the outtake that's on a few RAL session boots. It starts out very slowly with high voices saying "Yes I know you..." and has different vocals during the second verse. She doesn't do the wailing that's in the middle of the song, but at the end when she starts to belt out the lyrics, it continues a good 30 seconds longer than the album version is really fantastic. I posted it awhile ago, does anyone else like it?

it took me years to decipher that the electronic vocal of the middle bridge was saying "how will we feel ten/twenty years from now?" I always knew about the lyric but it took fellow Ledgies to enlighten me as to where it actually was in the song.

I Can't Wait is one of my all-time favorite Stevie songs and I love all the versions. The song never loses it's passion even when it's overplayed. It's immediacy is probably due to the fact that Stevie wrote the lyrics in one night and as far as I know, Stevie and friends also did the song's vocals in one night as well.

Even though the single climbed up to the top 20 (14??) , it was rarely played on the radio here in the New York area at the time. That always surprised and disappointed me but I guess when you're cast as the rock chick, a dance song isn't going to get the airplay on the rock stations.

Also, I love the video, especially the closing silhouette shot of her swooshing her white skirt through the cardboard stones as she lifts her head.
Of course, every woman I know focuses just on the fake nails.
Also, it's one more example of the old rule, never let yourself try to lip-synch on film when you're stoned.

I KNOW:D I went to the store, with my headphones on, and probably played it 7 times, and I never got bored, then I went over to a keyboard on display, turned it on, and played along with the song:D,the bells at the beggining, or whatever you want to call it, it was fun;)

even though it IS 80's, it's just, so energetic, and it just rocks...
