I've been meaning to ask this for ages.

Was the video for Edge Of Seventeen ever shown on television (being too young, I don't know if MTV was around then) in support of the single release?

I know it's quite simple (Stevie performing, Stevie in beach house, Stevie performing, Stevie on beach) but I really like it. Up until a year ago I wasn't even aware there was a promo video for it, so it was a real treat to discover it and I just assumed that it had been locked away in the vaults somewhere with the Gypsy Civil War video and never used.

What's the story, does anyone know?

thanks!

:D

It was never released.

I don't think they (Stevie, her managers, her record company, etc.) were ever totally pleased with the video, so they just abandoned it.

They came up with three damn videos for it!!! They should've at least released ONE! lol I thought they were all good, personally. Much better than the vid for SDMHA.

What were the other two like? I didn't realise there were three!

I'm pretty sure the Edge of 17 single is pre-MTV, being that the Bella Donna album was released in '81 and MTV started in Jan 1982...

The impact that videos have now was then at most in it's infancy and was probably more a vanity thing then a marketing tool. There were only few shows that played videos and HBO played videos before MTV. So it would not have been unusual for Stevie and her mgmt to abandon a video concept pretty quickly. At that time, you didn't need a video to promote a new/hit song.

I had MTV when it first came on. I vaguely remember seeing Edge on television. It might have been on MTV.

actually, MTV first aired on August 1, 1981....don't mean to be anal but i did a report on the evolution of music on television last spring and i had that date engrained in my head.....plus, both of my parents worked for a cable company back then and i remember all the hoopla about it....they used to get free t-shirts, pins and all sorts of stuff related to any of the cable channels. i used to have a pin that was distributed in 1982 when MTV was one year old. It was a color drawing of the MTV logo...but the "M" was made of cake with pink frosting and had one candle on it.
Of course, i have no idea where that pin is now. not that it's worth any money or anything. ok, i feel old now.

well I said I wasn't sure but I know they made some big deal when they launched it playing "Video Killed the Radio Star" and then Pat Benatar's 'you better run'?? video. But back then cable was not in every home...and it was not even available in my area for quite awhile.

the first time I saw MTV was at a party in the summer of '83. and I saw Stevie's Stand Back while under the influence  my friends had great laughs and still tease me to this day about watching me totally fascinated by this video and telling everyone at the party to "shut up and pay attention" and generally telling anyone who would listen "everything about Stevie".

My mother didn't allow me to watch MTV until I was 13 (1987). Therefore, one of the first videos I ever saw was Little Lies! I thought it was tres cool, but had no idea who FM were at the time. I even thought Chris and Stevie were the same woman filme in differnt costume and hairdos (I'm not very observant, lol).

I like the video but never thought it fit the song particularly well. And I don't remember it on MTV.

MTV had Stop Draggin' My Heart Around in heavy rotation for w while. Also, the Insider video (which looks very much like the Stop Draggin video, as I believe it was filmed at the same time.)

The Leather and Lace video was actually the live performance from the HBO concert...but unexplicably wasn't included in the official concert video release! Why??? One of the rare instances where Stevie, Sharon and Laurie sang together, front stage, at the same mike.

I don't think the Edge of Seventeen video was ever officially released, nor was it ever aired.

Not aware of the existance of any video for After The Glitter Fades.

And for the record, it was Stand Back that had a Civil War concept video, not Gypsy.

I've only seen two versions of the "Edge Of Seventeen" video... one that's basically just a performance piece, with a few additional shots added (such as Stevie on the beach, and with Maxwelton during the Rolling Stone cover shoot); and the other version that has all of that footage, plus some undefined storyline acted out by Stevie and Christopher Nicks.

(I prefer the former.)

Dissention... can you describe the third version? I'd love to see it!

(By the way, does anyone happen to have a .wav or .mp3 of Stevie's spoken intro to the second version I described?)

It's just like the first one you described, but it has less live footage. There is more footage of her on the beach, too. :)

Now, I have no excuse for getting that wrong since I have a copy of the Stand Back Civil War video!

Sorry.

That of course is the video Stevie allegedly abandoned because she thought she looked too fat in it! lol!

Thanks everyone for the information :)

A couple things here...I believe Edge could have been played on MTV because the single wasn't released until 1982 I believe. As for having SDMHA in heavy rotation, well, EVERY video at the time was in heavy rotation because they didn't have many videos. I remember when they did the "original VJ's" documentary type show when they said MTV almost tanked because they just kept playing the same videos over and over (which is funny considering that's how it is now). That's when they started the "I want my MTV" campaign. Lastly, although I don't think this really is the reason, Stevie said she dropped the Civil War version because she felt she didn't need to make really fascinating videos as Fleetwood Mac never had to make videos to sell records. I forget what interview that was in, but someone posted it here before. Lastly, I HAVE heard of a homemade video for After the Glitter Fades floating around, although I've never seen it myself.

This post is making me excited to take my Intro to Pop Culture class next semester. That's the one thing I love about going to a big university...they have so many classes to choose from (as long as you get in them before they fill). I think it's hilarious I'm actually going to be taking a class about Pop Culture.

I've been seeking the EO17 video for ages, but have only come across poor quality copies. Are there good quality copies out there?

Now to find a copy....

Still good though, with a clear picture and decent sound. I have it on DVD.

What is your copy like Nancy?

It's very "snowy." Definitely like 10th generation.

I got a video with all of the rare music vids (including all three EO17s) about a year ago and I would say that the video quality is an A. The sound would be a B, but I'm sure we would want to see the videos mainly. :D So, there are some good quality copies out there!! I am still searching for a good quality copy of Blue Denim...argh!

PS: You're welcome, Johnny! :wavey:
