What albums do you LOVE that were not that artist's biggest hit?

I can name a lot, but I'm obsessing on Don Henley's first solo album: I Can't Stand Still. I've had it for years and go through huge obsession phases with it. I love the songs and the slightly under-produced sound. I Can't Stand Still, You Better Hang Up, and Long Way Home are favorites. The only thing missing is Stevie singing on one of the songs...I just can't decide which one!;) I so hear her singing "ashes to ashes and dust to dust" in Them And Us, but I don't know about the rest of the song.

I love Nirvana's Incesticide and Metallica's Master of Puppets. Master of Puppets was popular but not as much as their Black album. Also I really like Tom Petty's Hard Promises. There are a bunch of great songs on it including Insider.

"Quadrophenia" by The Who - My all time favorite album.
"Tunnel of Love" by Bruce Springsteen - Too amazing for words.
"Monster" by REM - Most people hated that they went harder but it's a really good album if you give it a chance.
"Here Come The Noisemakers" by Bruce Hornsby - Overlooked as one of the best live albums around.

Bette Midler- "Divine Madness" (Her medley of E. Street Shuffle/ Summertime/ Leader of the Pack is absolutely jaw-dropping!!)

Tina Turner- "Break Every Rule" (She just plain rocks)

Tom Petty- "Pack Up the Plantation: Live" (one of the best live albums)

Blondie- "No Exit" and "Curse of Blondie" (Something for everyone: garage rock, punk, jazz, country, rap, blues...)

Madonna- "American Life" (Cheesy as hell, but a very guilty pleasure)

David Bowie- "Heathen" (Next to Ziggy Stardust and Scary Monsters, it's his best album ever)

Bjork and others- "Dancer In the Dark" Soundtrack (Love, love, love, love it! Catherine Deneuve sings on it!)

Anything from Sly and the Family Stone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

I have a lot...

No Doubt- Return of Saturn (I know that it did sell pretty well, but it never lived up to the success of their third (I think) album Tragic Kingdom .)
FM- Mirage (I know that this one did well too, but it's not too popular amongst the fans.)
Blondie- Plastic Letters, The Hunter, and their first album, Blondie.
No Doubt- The Beacon Street Collection.

Wait a minute. You're actually suggesting that MTM or HAHTF were big hits? Or that you don’t love those two?

I’d say every Welch-era album. Green-era gets its due in Europe alright.

Paris-first album and Big Towne, 2061

[…]

Peter Green-In The Skies

Agreed! Also, The Other One.

And I will always insist on Out Of The Cradle. ‘Till the day I die.

Jethro Tull-Songs From The Wood and Heavy Horses
Again in agreement. Also, Too Old To Rock’n’Roll!

King Crimson-Red and Starless & Bible Black
SABB was their biggest hit in the USA. But yeah, their debut overshadows too many good records from their catalogue.

Yoko Ono-her entire catalogue
 Peaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace!

In addition:

Bob Dylan – Selfportrait, New Morning and Good As I Been To You
The Who – Who Are You
The Kinks – Their entire catalogue from 1968 to 1972.
The Move – All their albums.
Roy Wood – Boulders
Cockney Rebel – The Human Menagerie
Genesis – From Genesis To Revelation
Bee Gees – 1st (yes! )
The Beach Boys – Every album released between 1967-1977, except 15 Big Ones :distress:
Black Sabbath – Sabotage
Judas Priest – Sin After Sin (if only for “Last Rose Of Summer” )
Alice Cooper – Dada
Sparks – Sparks, A Woofer In Tweeter’s Clothin’, Indiscreet, Big Beat, Introducing Sparks
The Clash – Sandinista!
Talking Heads – True Stories
Chic – Real People
Talk Talk – Spirit Of Eden, Laughing Stock
Yello – The first three, before they went mainstream.
Arthur Brown – Requiem
Associates – Fourth Drawer Down
Tyrannosaurus Rex – Unicorn, A Beard Of Stars
Pink Floyd – Animals
David Bowie – Low, Heroes
Iggy Pop – New Values
Nina Hagen – Nunsexmonkrock (don’t ask)

Yeah, I guess that does it for starters. ;)

I love Yes's 90125 album. Tons of fans disregard the Trevor Rabin stuff because the songs weren't 30 years long and there weren't any fiddly synthesizer solos. They also complain about it's commerciality. However, if they would actually LISTEN to the album they'd see that every song is totally different from one another and that for 80's rock, it was pretty damn ambitious.

Aerosmith's Draw The Line album is also criminally underrated. Most consider it a step down from Rocks and a dissapointment because they lost the metal and just went back to bein' raw and rockin' and I think it's all the better for it. Listening to Draw The Line makes you feel like a badass who's at the coolest party ever. It was my first Aero album and remains my favorite. No ballads! ;)

I also really like the Mac stuff Future Games up to Heroes Are Hard To Find, which is my favorite Mac album. :) I refuse to stick up in any way for Tango or Say You Will.

King Crimson's Lizard is also considered one of the big missteps in their career, and in some ways it is. But you can't totally disregard the Crimson/Jon Anderson collaboration on "Prince Rupert Awakes." It's a beautiful vocal performance and a beautiful song. The first side has some devastatingly wierd stuff even by Crimson standards but is a compelling listen. I need to get this on CD!

I also actually prefer Magical Mystery Tour to Sgt. Peppers and also prefer Venus And Mars to Band On The Run. So shoot me!

I was mistaken. For some reason I'm having a hard time remembering which album of their albums is the least liked. Is it Jazz?
Man, my memory is fuzzy right now.

It may be "Made in heaven", "Hot space" or "The miracle".
However I have to say that "The game" is an album that, much like Fleetwood Mac's Tusk, has been reevaluated with time but when it first came out it went mostly ignored saved for its big hits and it has been much more successful in America than in Europe anyway.
Having said that I love Crazy Little Thing Called Love. My mother is a huge Queen fan.

I have a few, some unfavorable among fans or flopped critically/commercially or just ones I feel don't get enough recognition when talking about said artist.
Cher - Prisoner
David Bowie - Reality
Fleetwood Mac - Future Games
Joni Mitchell - Don Juan's Reckless Daughter
Kate Bush - The Dreaming
Nico - The Marble Index and Drama of Exile
Patti Smith Group - Radio Ethiopia
Mick Ronson - Slaughter on 10th Avenue
T. Rex - The Slider
The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat

You might be thinking of Hot Space.
I couldn't really consider it their worst just because it contains Under Pressure.

However probably my little secret album is A Kind of Magic. I don't know why, here nobody seem to appreciate it. I love both the songs and the Highlander movie.
