View Full Version : stevie/robert plant similarities?
this may be farfetched but....my other favorite band besides FM is Led Zeppelin....i can't help but notice some similarities between Stevie's singing (of her past years) and Robert Plant's.
Robert's voice through the 70's went downhill in terms of his live performances. I have a lot of boots of their shows and he slowly lost a lot of range through the years and couldn't hit the high notes. I'll hear him singing at certain parts and i can't help but think that it's Stevie during the RAL era.
But, the thing that strikes me is that Stevie, during the RAL tour, really reminded me of him especially in the way that she use to go nuts, being spontaneous and screaming out the words.
JMO though!
PS...they kind of had the same hair for a while there too!

Well, Stevie never wore super tight hip-hugger bellbottoms that left little to the imagination like Robert Plant, but I guess that's for obvious reasons. Hmmm... both really pushed the envelope vocally and that's always a plus. However, it seems that whereas Stevie's voice has gotten deeper with age, Robert Plant's voice has gotten highter and more nasal-- he still stounds pretty good though. The last album he put out was really good--it's worth it just to hear his version of "Hey Joe," it totally rocks.

I saw Robert perform live about a year ago and got to stay for the aftershow while he did a very small meet and greet. He's taller than I thought he would be and looks quite healthy. He was especially kind to one distraught woman who was crying and hanging on to him. I don't know how they can do that every night. You're right though, his voice has lost a lot of range. The lyrics from Going To California remind me of Stevie and the song Juliet.
"To find a queen without a king,
They say she plays guitar and cries and sings... la la la"

that's funny you mention that because i was just thinking that the other day when i heard "Going to California"...it suddenly clicked that the line was similar to the one in "Juliet".

Ah yes, Lindsey's famous tight pants, he could give Robert Plant a run for his money!....
- Undisputably, both rock icons.
- Both were in rock bands that began in the 60s, although Stevie was not in the original lineup of FM.
- They both have long blonde hair, even to this day, but I do believe one's long blonde locks are not natural...guess whose?!! :D
- Plant left Zeppelin not so much by choice but by a very unfortunate circumstance (Bonham's death). Stevie left the Mac basically because Lindsey left. But both reconnected with they're band/soul mates. Stevie with Lindsey in FM. And Plant and Page have made music and toured together again.
- Plant and Nicks have both had successful solo careers.
- I think it's safe to say they're both hippies, albeit over-the-hill ones.
- There was a riff from a Zeppelin song used at the end of one of Stevie's songs done in concert. Can you name the Zeppelin song the riff was taken from, the Nicks song it was done after, and the tour it was done on? If you can I'll send you any cd of Stevie's or Robert's as an Xmas present. :D Really I will!
- Both were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as members of their bands, but are still not in as solo artists.......YET!!

God, the most obvious similarity-- both Stevie's and Robert's lyrics are filled with mysticism and both have taken hits by the critics for them. Both have said in interviews that they love writing lyrics shrouded in mystery.
But both are loved by the fans and have sold millions despite lyrics that some people consider silly.
It's funny though how many metalheads have no problem with Robert's lyrics but find Stevie's corny.

AND - they both refer to the "sea of love" in songs.

Plant-nicks connection:
Monte montgomery brings together guitarriffs of stairway to heaven and rhiannon on a livesong on his live at the caravan of dreams-album song 6, disc 2 (don't remember the title) - quite cool! (despite the syntax of this sentence:laugh:)

i always thought that stevie was inspired by the climax in "stairway to heaven" for the dramatic conclusion to the live "rhiannon"....then again, there's also the "dream on" (aerosmith) connection too.

I love mysterious lyrics --- leaves so much to the imagination. You can take all you want from them or take very little. And that was even almost a mysterious sentence I just wrote!
