View Full Version : Lindsey Cursing/Muttering During WISYA

OK I have always thought that Lindsey deliberately cursed/muttered in the quiet part at the end of WISYA, edited in as some sort of sabotage, a way of venting his frustration with how the whole project, especially with regards to Stevie, was proceeding.
But I thought it must just be a defect with my copy. Well now I just downloaded the so-called "Johnny Stew Edit" from Nancy's http://buckinghamnicks.net (is that our very own Johhny Stew? :wavey: Nice work!). Well this version has the same noise. It comes in at 2:59, and is actually repeated at least once later on, but at 2:59 it is most audible because there is, conveniently, a quiet spot in the instrumentation.
Can anyone make anything else out of it?
(I hope it doesn't come across as too indictful against Lindsey to suggest that he deliberately added this. I'm just making an inference from (a) the similar trick he used at the beginning of The Chain (debatable whether it's four or f!@# but still), and (b) the intensity of the TITN situation, especially if we make the assumption that WISYA was recorded, or at least produced by Lindsey, somewhere near the end of the project. Hell, we all know how ugly things were at that point!)

I don't know, I think it's stretching it a bit to think that was intentional. From what I understand, and I think Ken Caillat confirmed at least a little bit of it in his Q&A, was that it was a stray remark whispered in frustration during the recording process that was mistakenly captured when mastered for CD. I can't confirm myself, but I believe I've heard others say that it's not audible on the vinyl version of the album.

People complain so often about the repetition of the "what's the matter, baby," line, so I thought I'd see what the song would sound like with some of those lines edited out. (For the record, I miss them!)
I shared the edit with Nancy, and she asked if she could add it to her site. :D
Regarding the "noise" at 2:59 (on the edit), I've always just thought it was a little bit of stray hum/vibration from Lindsey strumming his guitar. It doesn't sound like a voice to me.

Well here they are together. http://members.inet.net.au/~joegrealy/images/fudge.mp3
I wish I could isolate the WISYA one but that's beyond me. I treid messing with EQ a bit but that didn't seem to help.
See it to me it really *does* sound like a voice, that's the thing. I guess it could be the guitar, but it seems to be from a clearly separate 'source' than the guitar being played, and the register just sounds vocal.

to my "Mono Mixes" versions of WISYA and what I hear what sounds like the vibration of the guitar string being picked up through Linds' guitars' pickup...
It is more prominant on the left channel's mix than the right channel's mix...

OK then. I don't know the first thing about guitars to begin with; but it's just that I don't hear that 'guitar noise' in any other studio track.
Either way it's very prominent, and I don't see how perfectionist Lindsey could have missed it. There was the issue of the band insisting that only Lindsey's b/ground vocals be heard at the end, so I'm sure that story factors into it.

I've heard on a TITN song is the supposed cursing during the chorus of "Family Man"...The words "Mother, Father" have long been rumored to actually be "Mother F--ker"!!!!
That rumor still cracks me up cause it sounds very feasible...:)
