I remember reading about a Stevie inspired movie a few years ago called Gypsy 83. If I remember correctly it was a road movie style thing with the lead actress searching out her mother or parents (can't remember exactly). I think it was played at a film festival, but I don't know how much it was shown after that. Does anyone know much about this? I'm quite curious and would love to see it...I mean all those Stevie inspired clothes and her music in a film would be so cool IMO :D
Hope you knowledgable Ledgies can help a relative newbie from the UK :wavey:

I remember hearing a lot about this movie too. Last I heard they were looking for a distributor for the film; I guess noone's picked it up yet.
I'm with you, seeing that much Stevie garb in one movie would be incredible! The soundtrack should be good too, I wonder which Stevie songs were picked.

I think it only had a limited release in the States but you can read about it at these links. I'm not sure the movie had any of Stevie's tunes in it though (probably cost too much for a small independent movie). Still looks cool. Sara Rue used to be in that show Popular, which is shown on Channel 5 in the UK.

Hey Sharon, thanks so much for these links. Now I know a little more :D . Dunno where I got the idea that her music is in the film as well, 'cause like these articles say it's a goth movie...cool!
But it's not available to buy though is it?
I'd love to see it even more now after reading these.
Thanks again :) :)

I think I remember reading in a review or article that fans might not get behind this movie since Stevie's voice is nowhere to be heard in it.

My friend in Canada saw it and said the only song featured in the movie is Talk to Me because it was written by Chas Sanford. There was a problem with not being able to get permission to use Stevie's own songs.

I caught 'Gypsy 83' during the D.C. film festival.. hmm.. i guess a few years ago.. enjoyed it's Stevie vibe immensly... but yeah.. Stevie's voice isn't in the movie.. and the Night of a 1000 Stevies scene featured in the film is nothing like the one I attended..but still had 'gossamar wings'... :-)
definitely worth a look, though. I keep going to the Lambda Rising book store in hopes that it has reached release on DVD.. no luck yet.

According to the director, they couldn't get permission to use any of her songs because her management didn't want her connected to the film because it had a gay character. The directors words, not mine. They used the background music to Talk To Me because it wasn't written by Stevie. But, they did use a scene from the Stand Back video (the treadmill).
Apparently the director is a big Stevie fan; he came out with a movie a few years back called Edge of Seventeen. :)

This is very disheartening and somewhat surprising to me. I guess to them, it's more about Stevie the product.

I never heard anything about not wanting her music featured in a film with a gay character. Everything I heard back when the movie was coming out was that using Stevie's music was just too expensive for the film's budget. This wasn't some big Hollywood production.
Cost is also the same reason that the song Edge of Seventeen wasn't featured in the film Edge of Seventeen that came out a few years ago.

Read it for yourself:
"A large obstacle the producers faced was clearing Stevie Nicks' music for use in the film. Despite promising talks with Stevie's management that began almost a year prior, principal photography neared without finalization of song clearances. The producers considered changing Nicks to another icon or creating a fictional one. But after much debate, they decided the script had been written as a love letter to Stevie and were confident everything would come together when she saw the film.
During the editing process, Todd and Karen learned that Stevie's management had decided against granting permission for any usages, citing the film's subject matter as "too much of a risk." This decision was made without Stevie Nicks being shown the film and, in all likelihood, she remains unaware of the project. Todd and editor Annette Davey began what they thought would be the heart-breaking task of replacing the Stevie music throughout the picture. That's when something wonderful happened. As each Nicks songs was replaced with tracks by such landmark groups as The Cure and Siouxie and the Banshees, the film's Gothic theme came magically to life. Every scene was improved by the new choices. "

"Too much of a risk." I.E. gay characters.
I've seen the film on bootleg because I love Sara Rue and trust me, it isn't risky by any standards. The only way someone would find it risky would be because of one of the main characters who happens to be gay. To be honest, it was a great movie and quite a sweet one at that. It had a good message and was a positive movie. I've read articles about the movie and nowhere does it mention not being able to afford licensing.

this is surprising seeing as how the gay male community is one of her largest fan bases. What idiots.
