View Full Version : The 3 Great Loves of Stevie's Life

This has probably been discussed before at some point, but I'm curious about that quote about Mick: "He was one of the three great loves of my life."
Even if she was waxing to hyperbole, and even if she has more than '3 great loves', what would they be anyway?
I'm assuming that one was Lindsey. But who is the other?
Don? (shudder) Jimmy Iovine? (she did have a romance with him didn't she?)

Joe Walsh has to be the third, along with Lindsey and Mick (blech). I'm not sure who would rank higher, Jimmy or Don. I'm sure she once felt abandoned by each of them, but she has since mended the fences. After them, I'm guessing Rupert - I think she really loved the geezer. That photo of the two of them in TOSOTM tour book, just the expression on her face as she looks at him. Does anybody know what broke them up? In the TimeSpace days, she wrote that something happened to him that made it impossible for them to be together anymore. Anybody know what she's referring to?
(BTW, I'm the next one on her list, she just doesn't know it yet. Lindsey who???)

I'm not sure but I think Rupert was married when she made that record. So what broke them up? Mrs. Hine's frying pan probably.

My guesses would be:

Lindsey
Don
Mick or Waddy

She speaks very highly of Waddy in the Timespace liner notes.

Mick

I think Joe Walsh was one of her great loves. Find it hard accepting mick as being one... ewwww. Lindsey without a doubt

Egads. If Mick truly is one of her three great loves, she had better be measuring on a logarithmic scale!

Logarithmically speaking:

1. Lindsey (because she said that what she shared with him is as close to be married as she will ever be)

2. ?? Not sure... have to think on that one... could be someone we don't know

3. Mick... only because she said so. ::shudder::  :distress:

I would say:

Mick
Joe
Rupert

I don't think Stevie even wants to admit to herself that Lindsey is on that list....even though he really obviously is. I don't think she really counts him cause of all the bad memories she has. But come on now, you can't write so many love songs about someone and not have them on that list!!

Kristin

She did say "great" loves so now I'm not sure if she's talking about Lindsey! I mean they had quite a turbulent relationship, I know they "loved" each other for quite a while but it was rarely a positive relationship. I'm wondering if in that quote she was talking about the most passionate loves of her life, not necessarily the longest lived. In that case, Mick and Don would definitely be up there, maybe Lindsey too but I don't know.

I can't possibly imagine that Mick is a great love affair for Stevie. I would have to say Lindsey is one and probably Joe Walsh and my third one is ("six weeks in a foreign country, how the time flew") Bob Dylan.

In the recent article in Classic Rock Mick is quoted as saying 'Stevie and I were, of course, an item for quite some time' and then Stevie says 'That relationship we had all those years ago was so short that it didn't have time to build up any animosities and jealousies. It began, it was, and it was over....Mick and I's affair was like a little dream.' I found it quite funny how their versions virtually contradict each other! Personally, I find it hard to believe that Mick was one of Stevie's great loves. Not to mention a little bit gross!! lol

No way is Kim Anderson one.
They were married for the baby, for only three months, apparently they haven't spoken since, their religious convictions didn't jive, and I cannot imagine that they even once slept together. (Wish I could say that about her and Mick. Blech.)

I still say it's Joe, Lindsey, and Mick, though Joe, Lindsey, and Rupert make more sense. If she hadn't named Mick, I wouldn't put his name on this short list.

Gldstwmn, I'm not doubting that Rupert was married, but that still doesn't explain what Stevie meant when she said something happened that kept them from being together again. Unless she means the wife showed up and shot his "Mick-woodens" off.

Gem, you are so right there. I think Mick might like to believe that he was one of Stevie's great paramours. And Jake, if you rmember most of the TOSOTM was reocorded in the "Castle" in LA. That cost, what was it, $25,000 a week or a month? I can't remember now and then they flew to London for two weeks or so to finish the record. I'm thinking Mrs. Hiney was in London and that's the something that kept them from being together again. I don't know. Marriage is a loose term in the music business.:)

I think it was hard for her to be friends with Lindsey because he made it hard because he was so bitter. One day I really would like to know the whole story behind their relationship. Like why on earth he is now getting down on his knees every night in front of her pleading. And why did she tell him to stay away? Something must have happened b/c before she was just smiling and laughing when he would play around like that with his head resting on her shoulder.

You are right of course, he did make it hard but still the way she described her affair with Mick, was almost like saying it was a quick fling. I do def think it would have been harder to keep the band together if they broke up but still had intense feelings for each other. The circumstances suggest that Mick was not a great love I think.
I agree Sharon.

Here's what I know: A long time friend of mine who is in the industry used to go to a lot of Dead shows (still does actually). Now EaglesMac, maybe you can help with the timeline here. Bobby D was touring with the Dead in the 80's and they played a big show in I think it was Oakland or in California somewhere. My friend was sitting on the stage with his friend who was mixing the sound. He prefaces this story with "I was really shy when I was younger." He calls it his Stevie story and I've heard him tell it a bunch of times. Anyway they're sitting there and this woman comes out in this gauzy duster type thing and of course all the guys are checking her out because a) she's beautiful and b) she's not wearing anything underneath. He turns to his friend the sound guys and says "Is that...?" His friend says "yeah, it's Nicks, she's with Dylan." Now keep in mind this was pre Betty Ford because, yes, I asked him about that too and the answer was affirmative. Apparently it was an open secret. My friend Mr. Shy said he couldn't keep looking at her because of the get up and he still gets flustered when he talks about it. I don't know about Destiny Rules but I definitely think Whole Lotta Trouble is about him.

Like a window, I guess. By the way, Mr. Shy now has seven children, including a set of twins. Maybe she cured him? Also, I did a little research on the timeline and it appears that this was in July 1987. Bob Dylan's "band": Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. They also toured Australia for a six week period in 1984 according to the Dylan sites I checked out. So...

And she DID cover Just Like A Woman in 1994 did she not.

WOW, I can't believe that! I never knew that.

It doesn't ruin a thing, it just makes her that much more of a "rock star".
Bob Dylan isn't my thing but I HAVE to laugh at the though of Lindsey in bed listening to Mr Shys 1997-98 album LOL. Didn't he say he did that in some article. I guess he's searching for WHY OH WHY him as well!?

I remember hearing in interviews that Stevie mentioned Joe Walsh as being one of her great loves.
She and Mick have mentioned that soul mate thing that they had.
Great love # three has never been identified but I would hope it is Lindsey since they were together for quite awhile and she does say that she loved him before he was famous and how she took care of him, sewing stars and things on his jeans.:)

Also, in the Whole Lotta Trouble tour book description of If Anyone Falls, Stevie calls Waddy "simply irresistable."

Hi folks--
Here's a lyric that I've always wondered about:

Well the two of us, well we must be...
A great temptation to have even started
Well don't you know, as you walk on by
That great temptations never really die...

Well I talked to my famous friend last night
My third day up...well, his second nighter
He says, "I don't know how you do what you do...how do you
let the world in?"
Well I say, "Well there's no way out..."
Then I just play out the game
Well the two of us...Widow and a Dove

So who the heck is she talking about here?

Im a HUGE Deadhead... I know of the Dead/Dylan tour it was in 1987. They played locally to my house at Anaheim stadium in CA. Im stunned about Bob & Stevie, but not surprised. She's had a few men in her lifetime.

Im not sure the "6 weeks in a foreign country" is about him though... maybe the 6 weeks is a part of their time together, but Aussies and UK and US speak english just sounds different. So go figure re destiny rules... it may be an amalgam of her times with Lindsey, Don, etc. in addition to Bob.

Three loves...

Id say Mick wasnt one. Too short of a time "together" despite their years and years in a band together. I think she says that to make him feel good and they are in the same band... doesnt want to hurt his feelings. My take is:

Lindsey
Don
Joe

Shortly behind:
Rupert
Waddy
Mick
Jimmy

It makes more sense that it's about Lindsey:

"When I see you again/ as I always do/ It appears to me that/ destiny rules/ that the spirits are ruthless with the paths they choose/ it's not being together/ it's just following the rules/ noone's a fool."

this sums up their relationship to a "T"; their fated way of always coming back together even when they've sworn each other off. It's destiny, this has to be about Lindsey!

The cool thing about Stevie is that she's always seen inner beauty over physical, it's obvious in the "great loves" of her life. Although I'm still unsure of Joe Walsh's inner beauty, ha!:D

I'm not at all surprised that Stevie has set up a trust fund for Matthew. With respect to Stevie's choices in men, I think Stevie, ever the romantic was into the beauty of the whole person, not just the packaging. Being that we've never met any of these people it would be hard for us to say, now wouldn't it? She's had some pretty grand, romantic adventures with these men and we don't even know the half of it.

I was just at burnish.net and there's a link to an item about Kim Anderson! He apparently lives and works in Minnesota for a company called Shussler Creative. I did a quick Google search on the company and found out that they're the same people who own the Rainforest Cafe chain. Although the burnish captaion says he's in retail, the complete article says he's the retail guy for Shussler Creative, whatever that might mean. Anyway, from reading the article, it certainly sounds as if he's had some recent contact with the band!

Well I talked to my famous friend last night

The famous friend is Tom Petty and I thought Stevie hooked up with him during that infamous Australia tour. I never heard anything before about Stevie and Bob Dylan. Interesting!!!

I've never heard anything about Stevie & Tom except for those tabloid reports that his ex-wife hated Stevie for losing weight & breaking up their marriage.
This is starting to sound like Mac's Landing.

You know, I always thought that song was about Tom Petty too, but in light of the stories about Dylan, now I've begun to wonder. Like most things Stevie, it's probably a little bit of this famous friend and a little bit of this famous friend.

Yeah, those are my thoughts too... a bit of one, a bit of another.

Recent contact with Kim and FM? Wow surprised to read about that.

This is the link to the little Kim Anderson tidbit. It's much too small to be called an article--but it still makes for some interesting reading! It's the second paragraph on the page:

the key to Two Kinds of Love is the line....Widow and Dove

to me, Stevie is the widow, like the black widow in Gold Dust Woman

and I have always thought the Dove was Prince(when doves cry). He was very big in the early 80's, friends with Stevie in the early 80's regardless of what she says on Storytellers, other interviews from the early 80's contradict her assertion that they only met once. He was very sexually appealing to both men and women, and known for his philandering and Rasputin/Svengali-like quality with women. So who knows how deep into his spell Stevie was drawn but a great temptation does not mean final consummation. so I think her relationship to Prince probably remained platonic.

but now with this new gossip about Bob Dylan, he could be the dove since he is the quintessential 60's peacenick poet...very interesting!!!

Stevie is/was the typical 60's/70's free-love kind of girl so she's racked up notches and it looks like some very famous ones on her bedpost.

My picks:

Lindsey
Joe
??? the married mystery man from the 80's & 90's after the final breakups w/Lindsey and Joe. you can infer from her songs that this relationship has never really ended

From BTM, you can tell Paul Fishkin keeps Stevie in his top 3...

my guesses are Lindsey, Don and Joe ......

I'm glad no one so far has bashed Joe, lol, except for looks.. :p His music is awesome; I always liked his stuff, but at my 'late' age just got really into it a few yrs ago.... currently listening to "But Seriously Folks". I didn't know he played all the instruments he does or paid any attention to his writing. Now I can see what Stevie 'saw' in him

I too was very impressed with Paul Fishkin on Behind The Music. I think it was so very classy of him to say he loved Stevie and he always will.

That story reminds me of when she asked Tom to be an honorary Heartbreaker and he told her "You already are one".

Spin magazine, 10-97

I think her great loves were Mick & Joe. She's admitted as such a bunch of times in print over the years. I don't know who the third would be, but I don't think it's Waddy, Don, J.D. Souther, Les Dudek or Johnny Starbuck. Maybe it's the guy from San Jose whom she wrote "Destiny" about in the early '70s.

It's quite simple really. Lindsey, 'cause she said so, that guy from the Eagles who sang "Leather and Lace" with her, and of course........Me!!!!!! What can I say? A guy can dream can't he?

Lindsey Buckingham-- not one of Stevie Nicks' "great loves"?
Next you're going to tell me that the sky is purple, cows bark, and a bear is sunbathing in my backyard. ;) As Linds would say "there's a lot of history there..."

Now for the other two, I would say Mick and Joe Walsh... although it pains me to say Mick. still can't wrap my brain around that one!

I think it was
Lindsey
Joe Walsh
and
Waddy

I know she says that mick and her time was special, but i dont think that relationship ranked as one of the special three.

I think it is Lindsey, Mick, and Joe. She has said in several interviews that Mick was a great love of her life. Therefore, he has to be on the list. Lindsey is on here, because of the passionate way she talks about him in interviews and in her lyrics. Just listen to the album, Say You Will, they admit that many of the songs are about each other. Joe is on here, because once again she has admit to this in interviews.

Me thinks they were
L. Buckingham (Babe!)
D. Henley (so-so)
M. Fleetwood (blech!)

Tom Petty (blech!)
Joe Walsh (blech!)
Jimmy Lovine (blech!)

I think it's Lindsey, Joe Walsh and another guy we may not know about.

I don't think her fling with Mick counts as love, it was lusty and freakish, IMO. LOL I honestly don't think it was that spectacular or much of an affair really. I think when she says Mick was a "great love", she means she LOVES him, she was not IN LOVE with him. JMO.

THE love of Stevie's life is, without question, Joe Walsh. Personally, I think she is in love with him from afar to this day (and it is quite possibly returned). I don't think I'm the only one who thinks Destiny Rules is either entirely about or at least has references to him. When Sheryl Crow interviewed Stevie in 2001, Stevie said the only person she's ever been with whom she felt she could spend her entire life with is a musician, but she wouldn't name names. Stevie was asked about him a lot in '91 because of the Timespace liner notes, and in the interview by Nicky Horne she says she "would've given up her damned career for him" and that she "will always love him". Since Stevie said this about her career, I think it pretty much leaves no question of her feelings for Joe. Maybe I'm totally off or reading into things, but I remember checking out a Joe album at the library that came out (I think) in '92 that has a very moving song on it called I'm Sorry. I have to wonder if he wrote it in response to everything Stevie was saying about their relationship in '91. Has anyone else heard this, and what do you think?
As for the others, I might not have guessed Mick right off if Stevie hadn't mentioned him, but we all know the intesnity that was their love affair. I mean, "Beauty And The Beast" was inspired by it! I don't understand why everyone is being so rude about Mick. Looks aren't everything, ya know...and he's not THAT hideous!!!
As for the third, I'm inclined to say Lindsey, but it's kind of anyone's guess...

Once I read an interview how Stevie talked about why she and Joe broke up and it was something about her album she was working on (RAL) and he was calling her, wanting to be with her, to see her, anything...and she was like, "I have to do this." I guess they were arguing and she was like, "I have to go" and he said something like, "You hang up that phone and it's over" and she hung it up, but it reallly hurt her to do so.

Reminds me of "when you had up that phone, you cease to exist" from "Welcome to the Room...Sara."

Maybe someone else has read this and can expound upon what I've said???

The story is.....Stevie was having a session and Joe came to see her and she got extremely upset because she had limited time to work (and also felt it was HER session), and Joe was distracting the band by telling stories and cracking them up, etc, so they couldn't get anything done. At the end of this, Stevie told Joe she didn't like where their relationship was going and started heading out the door. He said, "You know, if you walk out that door you basically cease to exist", and she "just kept going". If you want to know more about Stevie's relationship with Joe (and many other things, including her relationship with Kim), I can't recommend getting your hands on the Nicky Horne '91 interview enough (as well as other '91 interviews, but this one is the best). It is very compelling.
