Well, she's not really a "classics" author, but I think Alice Hoffman has a really similar style in terms of her wording. When I read her books, I can really "feel" what she is writing & I feel that way about Stevie's lyrics too. Alice is a very descriptive writer, you feel as if you are in the novel with the characters. Lots of "love & loss" going on, just like Stevie's songs.
And, like Stevie, her words don't always make sense to everyone. I mean, in one book, she kept describing how a drowned man's friend kept finding tiny little fish in his coat pocket (alive.) No matter how bizarre it sounds, I was like "oh, well of course, it makes sense, that can really happen" & she had me totally believing this was possible - very "magical" writing, lots of fantasy, but it's taking place in reality. Sorry if I rambled, hope this makes some sense!
If anyone's interested, here are some of her better novels:

Here On Earth
Blue Diary
Illumination Night
The River King
Practical Magic (yes, THAT Practical Magic! Great book!)

Newbery winning author Susan Cooper comes to mind. Her Dark is Rising series cries out for a Stevie soundtrack, and Rhiannon is a character in her book Seaward. The last lines of The Grey King remind me of my favorite demo, Lady from the Mountain.

I would say Taylor Caldwell and Anne Rice. No surprise, as Stevie likes both of them.
