Hey everyone....does anyone know if a video was ever made for this song? I have never found one, but love the song and would love to see her singing it.

Thanks!!

I don't think they ever made a video. If I'm not mistaken the song was before MTV time, 1978 or 9 I believe. And I know people still made videos then (Tusk) but I've never run across a listing for a video for it. Stevie stomped out of the studio after recording it because Kenny Loggins was apparently too overbearing on the production, so I doubt she would show up to make a video.

How is this for rank third party gossip - (laugh)

A friend on mine's old roommate in Sausallito, CA was a road girl allegedly "dating" someone involved in the production of that song. She said Stevie was really nice, but could not always sing correctly (note - she was first experiencing vocal problems around this time) which was very frusrating for all involved including Stevie. She also said Stevie also like to party (coke, acid, booze, you name it  ) and would often show up hours late and very out of it. But, they nonetheless got a great vocal out of her and, I think, it remains one of her biggest hits and certainly has staying power as it is often played to this day.

Kenny Loggins was the pickiest artist I ever saw during a sound check (next to one of the Indigo Girls tuning her mandolin for two hours) so this must have been an interesting session indeed. I always wondered about that. Maybe Kenny was more relaxed in those days himself.

hehe... I have a few B&W photos of Stevie @ a Kenny show, they seem really happy. Funny to read these stories! Love it though!

I read somewhere that it was not the greatest experience working on this song with Kenny due to what Sorcerer stated above. I know there is no video but it would have been cute though but I guess singing such a pick me up song would have been hard to do on film when tension is in the air. Wait did I just say that? I think FM perfected that! ;)

speaking as someone who was growing up in the 70's, videos were very uncommon and rare before MTV...you mostly saw your favorite musicians either at a concert or on a live tv performance like American Bandstand.

I was grocery shopping yesterday, not really paying attention to the store music because my list was soooo long. We literally ate everything in the house over the weekend but a catchy tune was playing on the store speakers. The song was almost overr before I realised it was Whenever I Call You Friend. I usually pick up a FM/Stevie tune within a few seconds of the first opening notes. I guess I was...

thanks for all the info....I seem to recall an article about her doing her vocal but there was something about too much brandy and them trying to get her to do her vocal but she wanted more brandy.....if I can find it, I'll post it.....

one of my good friends loves this song, but was shocked when I told her it was Stevie singing....all these years and she never knew it.....

I attended a Kenny Loggins concert when this song came out. I had insisted to all my friends that Stevie would show up and do "Whenever I Call You Friend" with him. Everyone thought I was nuts, but I finally convinced one to come with me. I can't remember the name of the place he played, but it was one of the smaller theaters in Manhattan. Well, about halfway through the show we see someone standing on the side of the stage smoking, I start telling everyone around us-"that's Stevie", and received many odd stares. Then "Friend" starts and out she walks, I and everyone in the place went wild! The seemed to have a great time doing the song together. What a great show, and I got to say "ha!" to all the none believers-who wished they had come along.
Thanks for bringing up this song-it brought back some great memories!

Oh if there was a live recording of SN and KL singining this, I would die on the spot

Seriously, it would be interesting to hear Stevie "behave" on stage in that era for such a demanding and trained vocal!!!!

It's funny because I always picture just a simple video along the lines of Stop Draggin. When the instrumental comes, I see Stevie turning from the mic with her tambourine and playing above her head to the drummer and dancing around. Then right before Stevie's line "Now I know my life..." comes on, she turns and BARELY makes it to the mic stand (like on The Chain on The Dance), and she just makes it and grabs it with confidence like she knew she would make it there. I love making videos in my head.

Stevie doesn't call him "slave-driver Loggins" for nothing.

Whatever KL did to get that performance out of her, he deserves a medal for it. IMO, it is one of the most powerful, dynamic vocals she has ever recorded. Ever.
