Hi Ledgies!
Im feelin a bit blue these days... and was curious... what Stevie songs cheer you up? What Stevie songs do you listen to that help bring a smile in your eyes? If youd like, elaborate as to why that song touches you.
I listen to Sara when Im down, it helps me remember she's the poet in my heart, to never change, never stop.

I remember graduating and feeling a little down nd like "is that all there is." Then I was driving by myself in the French Quarter in New Orleans and just jamming to Gypsy. The words just clicked for me then as they had so many other times about how you can dance away from yourself to become or at least grow into to a new person, etc. What a majestic song.

when I'm depressed, "I Can't Wait" always picks me up!!! You can't help but dance around the house to it...plus most of OTOSM is upbeat and it's a "make it thru the rain" kinda album
however, if I'm indulging in my depressed state Beautiful Child or the Tower Demo can always make me cry even more!!! SYW's Goodbye Baby is more upbeat with it's music box quality. and Street Angel is the saddest little album Stevie has...

"Edge of Seventeen" is my personal "power" song.
Let's see...also "Trouble in Shangri-La," "Stand Back" and "Sisters of the Moon" -- it's definitely got to be raucous if I want to get out of a slump. If I feel like being depressed for a little while, it's on to "Storms," "Beautiful Child," or bits and pieces of the Bella Donna album.

Gold and Braid!!! Oh my God...I just hear the intro and it just picks me right up! I love that song...also Edge of 17 is good for a lift....and Trouble in Shangri-La! I have no specific reason for why they pick me up...they just do...I love hearing them...
The first song that popped into my head was "Say You Will". One of the few up songs of hers. You know how they're usually dark and depressing(sad). Not this one though. :) Great positive vibe!!
"Here is a place that will never be dark......I remember that place" Just one of the many feel good lines from this song.

GOLD AND BRAID!
That is a great song!
Easy flow the tears, you see a pathway!
Ah just reading your replies is lifting me up... I want to go home now and dig out my Stevie tunes!

NO QUESTIONS ASKED!
I can't listen to this song without smiling. It's full of energy and it has an incredible build-up. Some of the lyrics are classic Stevie and also make me smile. I love "I don't blow the cold wind of it at you anymore!"

If I'm bumming in general, I reach for Stevie's escapist songs such as Nightbird, Lady from the Mountain, Santuary, Gypsy, Bella Donna, Sisters
If I'm upset with someone, I reach for her angrier power songs such as Edge, No Spoken Word, Nothing Ever Changes, Wild Heart, Imperial Hotel
I love Gold and Braid, too, but only the HBO concert/Enchanted versions.
Fifteen years ago Think about It was the song I reached for, but I think I played it too much. Still, the opening chords lift me up.
BTW, I was going to post this topic yesterday. Maybe bad stuff was in the air across this board.

There is something, I don't know- "bad"- not sure of the word but I definitely feel it, floating around. I'm bummed that I haven't seen the band since opening night and that I'm just working continuosly so I can go and follow them around next month. Anyway, to the topic at hand.
Fall From Grace- There's something cathartic about this song.
Angel- Light and beautiful, I love it.
Rhiannon- full rock version from FM Live. I didn't "get" the extended verses for a long time. In the last year or so, they make a lot of sense to me.
Stand Back-Red Rocks version with the wah ah ah part at the end, I just love that. I also like the Timespace mix.
Stop Draggin'- I just recently got the version with only Tom, so guess who sings the girl part. It's a blast.
Julia- the no fade version.
If Anyone Falls-it will be one of us!
Think About It-Rumors outtake version with the yeah yeah yeahs from S&L.
That's Alright
Smile At You (outtake)
The Dealer
Thanks for posting this thread I feel better already.

This is kind of weird, but the opening chords to Think About It remind me of music from an old video game I used to play called The Secret of Mana. When something good happened, like you're rescued or something, this music starts playing that's similar to it. Very funny...
Yes, Think About It is a good one, and I too immediately thought of Say You Will. SYW is a great driving song to ease your road rage mood. I completely picture a California beach and careless days when I hear the opening music. Other songs are her more upbeat songs or angry songs, because usually when I'm sad I'm angry at the same time, so belting away at these songs along with Stevie helps. I love listening to the Planets extended mix when I'm really mad.

Well, I myself have been feeling pretty down lately and I always listen to the Mac or Stevie for comfort and a pick me up.
I listen to Sara alot as this song just flows so smoothly and definitly soothes a headache. I have always loved Gypsy since it first came out as it always makes me sing and want to twirl, and always puts a smile on my face.
For when I am really down..I put on believe it or not..Leather and Lace. I love the part, "I have my own life, and I am stronger then you know." This part gives me a little boost.
I find comfort in most of FM's song and Stevie as they have great meaning that each person can interpret for themselves.

Oh, also the angry outtake version of Gypsy. It's perfect. Love the last part: "Gypsy, DO--DO--DOOOO--DO, the child was, child was enough, ooooh, oooh oooh oooooh"

Interesting,
I too, on occasion, find listening to Sara very uplifting.
Especially the after the intro when the drum beats come into play. You get this feeling like someone fabulous has entered the room and they can't take their eyes off of you for one second; that feeling that something heavy is going to happen and because of this it will change your life for the better!
Though, when I am feeling a bit violet and blue, I find listening to Stevie's "The Wild Heart" album works its magick on me. It always reminds me of the fall season in New England, my favorite time of the year, when the time draws nearer to where the physical world and spirit world make a close connection (Halloween). I am 12 years old all over again with all of my innocence listening to Stevie paint images in the corners of my mind a world I thought could never exist.
The hopelessly enchanted children and the Angels that just wouldn't give up at all!
Of falling in love in twilight, seeming like dreamtime.
That magick that awaits you in the garden beyond the gate.
On taking a chance with destiny and love at first sight!
Hearing the bird who sings its haunted call if only at night; through a windows' frost covered glass tearing you away from the warm fire and blankets pulling on your cape to go walking through the misty wood to a remote graveyard!
Of being that vulnerable and insecure and to have that special one make it all better by taking your hand and choosing you amongst all the others.
Of devoted loyalty that keeps you running.
Of a wayward lover and the power of your convictions to be able to change their mind and allow them to see the light of day.
Of a great love from a dream we held in a past life in Camelot. For it was Lancelot your champion who in a dream fell, accidentally, upon Excalibur, yet still remained love's victor.
And finally, at the cursed castle of the Beast and "her" Beauty, or...was it ~ Beauty and "her" Beast?
Whose forbidden love was the greatest love? Whose beauty and broken promise brought love to its death, and whose real tears freed a prisoner in disguise so that love could live again.
Stevie always said that "The Other Side Of The Mirror" was her "magick album, probably in the way in which the albums sounds. "The Wild Heart" is an album has a magick that allows you to be alone, to go inside and recharge your batteries and to come back to the world a little stronger and wiser.
Life, Love, and Magick~

But then again, my son's name is Jake, so maybe that's it... (well, he IS named Jake...)
There isnt one thing specifically that's dragging me... its just little bits here and there of whatever annoyances are coming before me. However re: the Ledge, the whole fan club /Micks BBS thing is a bummer. I hope everyone can relax and work towards a peaceful solution.
A sincere THANKS from me to you all. Your giving me ideas, but furthermore helping my spirits. For that, I truly thank you. I know we are all on the WWW, but my feelings are sincere.:)
This might seem a little strange, but I often listen to Sometimes Its a Bitch when I'm depressed. The song is true (even if Stevie didn't right it!)- sometimes it IS a bitch, but sometimes its a breeze too. The whole song has that "there's always a light at the end of the tunnel" message.
And Gold and Braid is my absolute favorite song too!
I hope you feel better :D

I was going to create another thread, but I might as well just post this here. I work as a part time manager at a retail store for money for school or whatever. Wednesday, I was counseled, aka written up, to the extent that I have 60 days in order to change my negative attitude because it's bringing the management team down. We work in higher stress situations where sales numbers are everything, so we have to really sell as much as we can to every customer. So, according to the store manager, my negative attitude is causing poor numbers (which is kind of a laugh in itself). I was so annoyed and mad Wednesday (now it's just funny) that I was thinking, what Stevie song will cheer me up. I suddenly thought of "Doing the Best that I Can," and it's so striking how much this song could be interpreted exactly as my experience. The other managers all told the store manager about my attitude but no one ever told me about it...leading to the point that I got written up. So, the lines of the song:
I just played the part, I didn't win or lose, maybe next time I'll think about how I'm feeling, cause I'm doing the best that I can, and the whispered secrets go on and on, no one says anything to anyone, you watch after her (him, or me), and your word is law, she (he, or me) thought (he) was out there, but nobody saw, I didn't win or lose, I just took the cards, but I paid a price for it all...I'm doing the best that I can...
Those words are exactly the type of politics happening in the store. I just think it's so amazing how I can always find a Stevie song that almost completely connects to my state of life. So many people think Stevie writes self-absorbed and way too abstract, but it's those things that make her songs able to connect to people in different situations. I've been playing that song in the car over and over since Wednesday...made me feel a lot better.

gosh it's strange to read that many other people are in this strange funk as well.... i can't get over whatever is bringing me down... and it's starting to freak me out- all i want to do it sit on my bed and cry... there's just something in the air... something very odd...
and so far i haven't really been cheered up by ANY stevie song except Reconsider Me... when you're all alone and need someone, telephone and i'll come running... it just makes me feel like maybe there is someone out there who loves me... a little bit of comfort.. i guess..
i wonder if it is something going on in the world in general right now that is creating this negative aura... or if it's just something in the fm fan world... whatever it is i want it to go away...

Did you see the big, full moon tonight? When I first heard Julia, I always thought Stevie said "I would cry to the moon" instead of "I would cry to be moved." I think there's some truth to the way I first interpreted it.

The Wild Heart reminds me of Fall (my favorite season) too!! Mainly because of Nightbird-- "and the summer became the fall/ I was not ready for the winter/ it makes no difference at all/ 'cause I wear boots all summer long." Possibly my favorite lyrics in any song PERIOD!

I would have to say either Stand Back, Stop Dragging or Edge of Seventeen as individual songs. Otherwise, I would just put the Rock a Little album on. That always cheers me up, especially starting off with I Can't Wait. What a great rocker!

At least to my ears. :)
As far as Stevie songs that cheer me up... well, is it cheating to say "all of them"!?
She really has written songs that fit my every mood, and, as Justin said, songs that... though they're so firmly rooted in Stevie's personality, and experiences... are so relatable for so many people.
I think the abstract, stream of consciousness nature of her writing, is what allows the songs to take on so many different meanings for people from all sorts of backgrounds and experiences.
Her songs are all so closely linked to her psyche, but the desire for love and happiness that she's tapped into, is universal.
For all of the glamour, and the trappings of her rock and roll lifestyle, she manages to come across as a very warm and likeable human being.
While she'll never appeal to everyone, she appeals to far more people than many artists could hope to... and when you think of how long she's been able to maintain that appeal, it's astounding.

Life is a landscape. Sometimes you're on top of the mountain and other times, you're lost in the valley.
"Rhiannon" comes to mind for me. Sometimes I feel like a bear in the night, wanting to become that part of the wind. I fell in love with that song. "Landslide" reminds me of my childhood. I grew up in a coal mining community. You could climb a mountain, turn around and see every other mountainside for over a hundred miles. It was spectacular in the winter. "Gate and Garden" reminds me of the simpler things when everything else goes crazy. "Glitter fades". Grasp hold of the lyrics and the feeling really will remain.
Saddest for me. "Storms". When I feel like I just can't do anything right. That song rages through my head, softly.

In addition to the others I've posted, I must mention Outside the Rain. It's never been a super-favorite of mine, and for awhile I wondered why Stevie always insisted on keeping it in the set to the exclusion of more beautiful or dynamic songs, but this song does really hit the spot for me sometimes when I need it. Something in the repeating "It's only...a dream." It can work its magic for me.
