View Full Version : What one thing about the Stevie look would be hardest to give up seeing?

Hey, a 55 year old woman can make her own decisions, for sure.
And Stevie has earned the right to be taken seriously for her music no matter what she does to the rest of her.
Still, part of the appeal is the look.

I could pretty easily accept it if Stevie gave up boots, or even platforms, though I like her in them.

I could accept if she started wearing pants, or even jeans again, though I like the witch thing.

I could accept it if she wore thick crocodile glasses or got blue contacts, though I like her brown eyes.

I could EVEN reluctantly accept it if Stevie ditched the girlie-girl look. Can't you just see her in one of Lindsey's old V-neck white t-shirts, maybe with a short sleeve rolled up over a pack of cigarettes? With low-hanging baggy jeans and big clunky workboots?
Would take some adjustment, to say the least.

BUT...

I would freakalittle if Stevie went out and chopped most of her hair off and dyed it black.
Or if she went for the Sinead look.
Or the Bo Derek look.
Not that that would ever happen.
The signature hair has been around for so long, and she even sings about it. How many sonwriters DO sing about their own hair? I guess this means it's a keeper, thank goodness.

What would be weirdest for you?

I'd have to say the hair, although I love the witchy dress too. There's a picture floating around of Stevie playing a show in 1996 or somethingm at some outdoor concert during the day somewhere, and she's wearing this ugly bright floral moo-moo type dress, but because of the hair, she still looks great!

Yeah, the first thing that popped into my head was the hair! That would just be weird...but like, at least where I live, it seems like ALL the old people have the short Golden Girl hair....so what if Stevie does that!?! That would totally freak me out...although I'm sure she'd find a way to make it look great!

And...I've also seen the pic of her in the floral dress, but I don't remember it being anything like a moo-moo, in fact I thought it was a really lovely dress...and she was wearing shades, she just looked like someone you'd see at Red Lobster or something...not bad...but definetely not her regual stage wear.

Oh good heavens, that kind of hair would open the way for Doris Roberts to play her when they make a Fleetwood Mac movie.
Please, no.

I think Stevie is a great songwriter and her fashion sense is unique, no matter how alluring and fun it is, this would not affect my liking her any less if she gave up the boots, the shawls, etc.
I can say that I would never want her to repeat the fashion error of the big poofy, sheepy white hair she had around OSOTM and those horrid shoulder padded jackets that made her look like a football lineman.:distress:

Yeah, I don't mind the linebacker look on the back cover of TOSOTM tour book, but the look does look bad in the other photos, especially the ones that were not carefully posed.

Ooh. So that's what we get when we have Stevie in colors, huh? This is how she would look if she'd become a teacher all those years ago(and got dressed up for a nice dinner at Red Lobster, lol). Maybe basic black isn't so bad after all.

Thanks for digging up the pic!

Just wondering, is that photo from her performance at Woodstock in the late 90's? I think that year's show was called A Day in the Garden or something like that.

I would have to say her smile. If she were to never be able to smile again, god help us. Its just so enchanting and warm!! Makes you smile when you see it.
And yes I would agree on her hair. I was picturing her one day with short hair..kind of like to her shoulders. I thought that would be kind of nice, BUT, I have to say I looooooove the long hair.
And I am going to say it...as much as I KNOW she would look fabulous in her white sorcerer video outfit on stage, part of me is so used to the infamous black dress.

I think that is from a private show Stevie did in Tampa/ St. Pete in 1996. I think it's from the sound check. I love her shades and the big cross.

I would have to go with her choping off the long blond hair. My mom is 51 and her hair is that long. She seems to be under the impression that older people shouldn't have long hair like that. I think Stevie reaffirmed for her that it's O.K. Next to that, It would be if she ever got rid of her shawls...that just like, could not happen...lol. And I agree with Jessica Leigh...that dress isn't that bad...it's the 90's in that picture..remember? Now the shoulder pads and that whole Rooms on Fire getup...didn't dig that...now that's something ya'll could be like, "Stevie...no sweetie...." but floral dress isn't all that bad...not diggin' the cross with it though.

I have read in several interviews of Stevie's that she actually does not run around her house in black lace and chiffon as everyone would like to believe (Myself for one). During this interview, incidentally, it was pointed out that she was actually wearing a floral pattern on black dress with little white lacey ruffled ankle socks. She may be big on the floral patterns; fair enough, it's is lovely look.

This is a passionate topic for me, for I am completely obsessed with Stevie's on stage/off stage look. I'll never forget making the realization back in 1983 that nobody dressed like Stevie, not even when it was fashionable. And yes, I know that she didn't exactly invent the look and put a patent on it (This I know being a student of fashion). She is a character out of our subconcious past that has been able to resume her story telling for us in our present time and in the process reinvented a look that always seemed to create that Charles Dickensian/street urchin look, like the reincarnated "Little Match Girl" gone chic, or mad like Miss Havisham in "Great Expectations"(who, as we all remember, wore the same wedding dress for 20 years, as it fell apart). I was 11 years old at the time and still discovering the pieces to the puzzle that Stevie was apart of something greater than herself solo.

And yes, though I love Stevie's music and lyrics, I have found myself in the catagory of people who cannot separate her music from her image. I have grown very fond of knowing that the lady who sings "Nightbird" really does appear out of the misty night wearing velvet capes and wing sleeves of gossamer walking on foundations that evoked a dreamy idea that she actually was not of this earth, but much closer to the sky. I knew what she meant when she sang "...capes pulled 'round them tight, cryin' for the night, cry for the nightbird ~ tonight..."

And it made even more sense when she sang "I'm timeless ~ in my luxory..."

For me, the whole notion of Stevie without her complete West Coast, Welch Witch inspired finery would break my heart to the core.

But, if she had to make us choose, I would have to say It would be hard not to see her wear her boots with her bias-cut hankerchief-hem lined skirts. For as any sensible girl knows, you can get away with this basic/staple look with any T-shirt!

A little note of gossip with respect to Stevie's fabulous hair. Years ago I used to get my hair done at a salon called Architecs and Heroes in San Francisco on Fillmore Street. (I live about eight blocks from here so it was convenient) I've always worn my hair long so I've always wanted the best stylist and colorist and of course Stevie's name always gets mentioned when I meet a new stylist just to throw names and great hair around for ideas. So who should happen to be helping me with my coiffure one day but the very stylist who did Stevie's hair when she was in town. The revelation, though, was when he told me that Stevie actually has her hair weaved in the back because her hair was obviously thinning out. This was something he did for her everytime she came in. Now, of course, he proceeded to tell me that Stevie was a Lesbian and had a house in San Francisco where she lived with her girlfriend of twenty years!?! I was more completely shocked and fascinated about her weave!
I mean, I knew that Stevie dabbled in the dark arts of hair clips/pieces and wigs. Anyone could see that from the "Tango in the Night" tour concert on VHS. I suppose I was as enthralled as anyone would be when they find out about an intimate piece of info about their idols.

I guess, now that I'm writing this, I would be niave to think that I was the only person to realize her hair has been woven in. It is interesting, though, to watch "The Dance" concert. You can really notice most of the very long pieces her hair she has have been woven in, which explains why it seemed to be a little fly-away and bed-tossed and very, very healthy looking.

I will also point out that I have nothing against the idea of hair weaves or extensions ~ many people are doing it and when it's done right it looks great!

Well she doesnt wear black all the time.

I have a shirt she wore in her larger days, likely 94-ish, its BRIGHT HOT-PINK with lace cuffs on the short sleeves, its a tee-shirt really but a blousy type.

I also have a skirt she wore in the late 70's (likely), its totally her style, it is black but it has colorful designs on them. Reminds me of a Gibson Girl style.

I also have a purple sheer chiffon-ey Gibson-esque dress she wore too.

I do have to say, made me realize just how SMALL she really was holding up that 70's skirt.... she had almost no waist!

Actually, I think that pic is from a sound check. Stevie would never perform in a dress like that.

The long hair. God forbid Stevie decidessomeday that she'd look more youthful and sporty with a short-clipped style.

I've always loved Stevie's eyes. Theres just something about those eyes? So if one of her eyes fell out it wouldnt be too bad, but if both of her eyes fell out at the same time? Well, lets just hope her eyeballs stay put.

I agree with what everyone has said about Stevie's long hair. I wouldn't care if she dyed it (brown or pale blonde or highlights or something, just not black or red), or even if she cut it a little... but she's gotta have long hair. It just wouldn't be the same without the swinging long tresses that go down past her shoulders. It's such a big part of her performance look.
I think that floral dress is soooo not Stevie...nothing against the dress, it just looks totally bizarre on her!

However...

When I listen to Stevie...

I FEEL the music...
INSIDE...
I guess, for me...
it runs much deeper that a "look".

I don't think there is anything she could
do to her "outter" appearence that would truly
have an effect on me.
