What are your favorite "recurring" lyrics in Stevie songs? I love the themes that pop up in different songs through the years and when she uses the same lyric in a whole new way. I was just thinking of this because she uses the same lyric in two songs on SYW:
"I like the coastal cities, I like the lights. I like the way the ocean blends into the city at night..."
Though she does interchange "city" and "ocean" from Illume to Destiny Rules.

Anyway, some of my favorites:

"Sands of time like shattering glass went past me"

"You used to call me wicked...I used to call you friend"

"And the days go by...doing nothing about them...how much time will I have to spend"

Im all into "Like a diamond snake in a black sky" right now due to the Illume / DR references.

I'd have to say my favorite is "Crying in the morning, trying to be strong, waiting for the Spring to turn into the fall...love don't mean what it says at all...my destiny says that I'm destined to fall..."

I guess because it was really the first time I noticed that she does the recurring lyric thing (lol...apparently I'm not too observant..it took three listens to SYW to catch the Illume/DR ones) And because I just love the lyric!

"you're not my friend, you're not my love and this is something we really don't discuss"

"I'd like to leave you with something warm"

those are my two favorites but any repeats of lines always makes me smile. It's a Stevie signature only real fans understand!!

I like that one too, though doesn't she repeat the whole verse - 'I like the coastal cities...' etc?

p.s. Hello everybody, I'm new here, though I'm sure I know a few of you already. I thought it was about time I joined up with the ledgies as it's ovbiously the place to be!

I was listening to She Loves Him Still the other day and realized she uses "the sands of time like shattering glass went past me like a tunnel to the sea" in this song and Goodbye Baby. My favorite would have to be "upstairs the big old house is mine, downstairs the stars still laugh and they shine" or the variation thereof.

This is a great topic. My mother and father decided to take the Fantastic Voyage to Nashville with my sister and I when FM played on 5/31.. and on the way there, we listened to SYW.

My mother says, "Didn't she already say that once on this cd?" (Re: coastal cities/lights part.) I explained to her that, no, I don't think Stevie Nicks has run out of phrases.. she's been doing the duplicate lyric thing for a long time.

For some odd reason, Mother just did not want to accept my explanation of how Stevie's songs are like.. stories set to music.. and how sometimes they go in sets or tell a continuing story.. or theme.

She was like, "well, that's nice I guess." It's probably very true that people just GET IT, and others don't. The one's that don't have no idea what they're missing.

(to answer the question, the track a ghost through the fog lyric is one of her best, IMO.)

Well.....I don't know if it is one of my favorites....but another one that she repeats is "Well take your violet and blue mornings with you." It is in Violet and Blue, and she also says it at the end of I Need To Know live.

Well, I don't know that I have a favorite, but I do have one that puzzles me. A word though, not a phrase.

It is FOOL. It has driven me nuts for years. What is up with the Fool thing ?

"Poor Little Fool"

"No One's A Fool"

"Was I Just a Fool?"

There must be other times this word pops up. They just escape me at this late hour. For crying out loud, who even uses the word fool ? And who called Stevie a fool ? It sure stuck in her craw !

That is so funny....thanks for pointing that out, thats hysterical.

I love the "fool" thing. I don't think it's so much that anyone ever called Stevie a fool but that she felt like one, which in my opinion is much worse. That sticks with a person.:)

Just thought I'd say that as a British person it isn't unusual for the word fool to be used in everyday conversation. Perhaps Stevie uses this a lot cause of hanging out with all the British Mac members :)

Aaahhh...but it is so much more romantic to be a fool!

They wrote the book on spiritual discovery and exploration!

To be the rebel who steps out into the unknown without caution, though, they are not brave they are without fear!

They are carefree, spontaneous, frivolous, and enthusiastic, and at times impulsive.

A rule breaker who's able to think outside of the box ~ an innocent who is wise and lives by no rules what-so-ever!

They may be nothing, and yet, they may be absolutely everything!

:wavey: Hey everyone! I'm new to the Ledge, been lurking for a while and I'm a *huge* Stevie fan.... when I saw her coming up onto the stage at the Greenville show on June 1st I actually bawled my eyes out. (And proceeded to do so three more times during the show) the woman is just magical for me (as I'm sure she is for so many of you!)

anyway, to the topic at hand....

I didn't hear anyone mention "the arms that used to go around you" or some variation of that, I think I've heard that several times, almost always, if I'm not mistaken, in songs that refer very strongly to Lindsey. I always tell my fellow Stevie-song interpreters that "the arms that used to go around you" is like my signal that a song is about Lindsey. It's like an alarm. Ha ha ha.

Hmm. Well, I've only come up with 3 songs in which this phrase appears, but it seems like more to me. Maybe it's just something that's always stood out:

"...when it's over, how then will you feel? will you miss the arms that used to go around you?" - love is

"...somebody else's arms will wrap around him..." -too far from texas

"...maybe your arms are not supposed to go around me..."
-destiny rules

anyone else?
